syncrefresh option in groovymame
« on: May 19, 2015, 11:39:55 am »
Hello guys!

I have got a general question concerning the syncrefresh option in mame. I read a topic in eiusdemmodi where it states that this option only worked until mame version 0.113. This option gives you smooth scrolling without using either throttle or triple buffer which cause input lag. There is also a small patch given which tells you that you can reactivate syncrefresh in newer versions of mame.

My question is this. Does the syncrefresh option work in groovy mame? As far as I under understand you have to deactivate throttle and triple buffer in order to reduce input lag to a minimum since groovy mame will chose one of the options by itself when it needs to do. The problem is that I have to put at least one of the two options in the groovymame ini file to 1. Otherwise the game would run too fast. This means that I cannot have both triple buffer and throttle set to 0. Syncrefresh seems to have no effect at all.

I am using groovymame 0.149 with windows xp 32bit service pack3 and crt emu driver 6.5 32-bit with an ati radeon x550 graphics card.

Perhaps someone knows anything about the topic above

Hi stiegi,

You're confused about the throttle option. It has nothing to do with input lag. The -throttle option MUST be enabled for the -syncrefresh option to work. This is true for GroovyMAME and any MAME compiled with the patch I posted in Eiusdemmodi.

The only reason to disable -throttle is to allow smooth scrolling in combination with -triplebuffer when you're running an official build of MAME since version v0.114.

Basically if you're running GM just leave the default options.
Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.
