Looking for suggestions on LCD for Custom Built MAME Cab
« on: April 30, 2015, 01:43:47 pm »
I have a MAME Cab that I started building about 9 years ago that has been sitting unfinished for about just as long. Friends have been coming over and bugging me to get it up and running lately which has kind of lit a fire under me to finally finish it up. Years ago I always had it in my mind to get an authentic new 27" Multi-Sync CRT monitor. But I never wanted to spend the $500 and now it looks like those are a thing of the past. Now that I'm working on it again, I'd like to get some more modern games running in it, so I think LCD will probably be the way to go. I have a space of about 25 1/2" W x 22" H in the monitor space of the cab. I'd like to put at least a little bit of a bezel around the monitor when I get it in. I'd imagine I'll be building a back wall for the monitor compartment to mount the LCD as well. I have smoked glass that is fairly dark that will be going over the monitor. Not sure if that's a problem or not for LCDs? Looking for suggestions of a good LCD to fit in my space (big as possible with a bit of room for the bezel) and will look good that will be used for playing mostly older arcade games but some more modern games as well . Any suggestions? Will the glass be an issue and have to be replaced or will it work with an LCD? Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

Looks like a standard computer monitor to me. What makes this recommended? Also, I'm looking for something bigger and something that can be mounted.

It's 4:3, has excellent viewing angles, and is a great size.

Is there anything wrong with going with this one? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236295 27" Widescreen with VESA mount capability, good response time and makes full use of my available space. If there is something I'm missing that is wrong with it, please let me know.

Any reservations about my choice? Like I said, I built years ago and never planned for a LCD, but decided to go that route now. I have a 4 player panel and think the one you suggested would be a bit small and want to maximize the use of the space I have available.

I think what games you will be playing primarily is going to matter.  If you want to play older games the link yotsuya provided would be a great LCD option.  The monitor you selected would probably be best for playing modern games and a purist wouldn't quite like playing most 80's-90's games.

I prefer 4:3 to 16:10. I have that exact Samsung in my MAME cab. It's perfect. But it's two player, not four, so I'm gonna bow out. Good luck!

I think you could get more monitor for the same money if you look at Korean brands. I wouldn't buy an 11 year old 4:3 LCD. LCD panels have come a long way in the last 5 years.

Putting a modern super bright LCD behind dark tinted glass is what I would do. In low light this will make the image appear to float behind the glass, regardless of aspect ratio.
