Awesome project!
That cabinet really deserves a NESRGB mod on that NES.

I think eventually it's going to get an NES top loader.  Can you do an RGB NES with a crt? I thought those were just beneficial with the new LCD tvs?

Yes, of course! RGB NES on a CRT is a beautiful thing.

What's the model of your TV? Better yet, if you can get a photo if the Jungle IC (usually the largest), we can talk RGB input hacks.  :)

Awesome cab, pal! You're killing it!  😀

You had me at "yes, of course" ha. That's sicK news! I m gonna do an RGB modded top loader upgraded in the future then! :)

But you lost me at iC jungle....haha. I'm not the most electronically inclined....don't get me wrong, I can wire a Jamma harness all day long, and apparently decase a non discharged CRT without killing myself....but that's the limitations of my talent so far. Haha. :)

Would using one with an RGB mod require you to have a TV with component RGB or SCART input?
(or is there a way to directly interface it?)

You'd have to have a TV that has SCART or BNC connectors for R,G,B and Sync. In North America that usually means getting a Sony PVM monitor, but they're starting to become more scarce and expensive to find since the hipsters starting diving into retro gaming.

For component you'd have to have the RGB coming out of the NES converted to Component RGB since the sync is embedded into one of the color channels. This is probably the best way to go if you don't get an expensive PVM, and cheap Chinese-made converters are available and are good enough for some people.

But, the NESRGB mod also has S-video output encoded from the RGB, the quality isn't as good as pure RGB but it's much better than composite and regular s-video.

Tell me the model of the TV you've already got in there and I'll research whether it's possible to modify for an RGB insert. If it is, I'll give you the step-by-step. :)

I've MAME'd three cabs using RGB modded CRT TVs and the displays all look magic.

I've seen this kit running and it was outrageously good. Super crisp!

Even if it's a longer term project, this cab deserves RGB!

^ agreed. The original Ninty cabs are RGB monitors, seems only right to give this one the same treatment. :)

Also, does anybody know how do you adjust the picture on a CRT TV? The horizontal display is off about a half inch to the right.  It's kind of annoying,  are there adjustment pots on TV chassis?

You have to find the service manual for the TV and find the service-mode code that gives you access to the hidden menu for adjusting the picture.

Downloaded the Service Manual for your TV and spotted the RGB lines straight away:

There's a very good chance your TV can be modified for RGB input. :)

The idea would be to apply a voltage (say, 1 volt) to the blanking pin and cut the OSD traces to insert the NES RGB output. You lose the OSD display (e.g. volume slider, channel indicator, etc.) but gain RGB. In my builds, I install a 4 pole relay so I can easily flick back to adjust contrast and brightness using the OSD and TV remote. Works a treat!

Sync would go straight to the composite video input. Easy. Does your TV power on to AV mode?

That's the high-level overview.

This is awesome! Thanks for doing this leg work.  When I get ready to upgrade to an RGB modified top loader I'll look into doing this....or trying anyways. Haha.

And I think you asked me earlier, but the TV does not go straight to video When turned on.  I have to manually change it when I power on the cab.  I actually have to turn on the TV as well. I bought a universal remote for it.

I did a lot of research on CRT RGB Mods. It seems that on the later generation of CRT's it is not very complicated. I happen to live in a part of the world where you can still buy bran new CRT TV's. I think lots of us here would be very interested to read your step by step tutorial.

Last time I checked it was Nepal, no?

Over the past 4 years I have lived in Tanzania for 3 years, then 10 months in Nepal, now I'm in Lao. But I'll be in Bangkok starting Mid November for two months for the birth on my next child.

You can buy brand new CRT TVs here, some are made in Thailand many are made in China. A lot of the plastic shells even have the cut out for a SCART cable but I have yet to see the insert punched with a SCART sockets install. Here are some links I have found that make some RGB CRT mods look simple. And correct me if I'm wrong but I think Paradroid method is based off of this?

Very cohesive art theme. The cabinet turned out incredible, and I foresee a lot of CP and Bezels incorporating the gold or silver foil in the future projects here (myself included).  :)

Nicely done. The finishing touches should be an RGB mod, and reversing those Marquee line angle, but that can come later after you've enjoyed your work a bit.

I think for the execution and accessible theme, this will be a top runner for BYOAC's Upright Cab of the Year. Great job.  :applaud:

Thank you gentlemen! Thank you for all your input.  I got so many great ideas from this community!

Yeah, I'm gonna make those corrections for sure.  I Hit this project pretty hard over the last month or so, so yeah....I'm probably gonna take a break for awhile.  But eventually, it'll have side art and the corrected graphics.

And yeah, more NES themed cabs will be awesome! I eluded to my next NES Nintendo build over in KLOV and will start a thread as it gets more serious.  Also, I really want to make a red 5 slot DK with a 25" monitor and arcade sd to replace my Pauline cab someday.

Next year. Here comes winter...... :(  :badmood:
