arcadeos???
« on: February 28, 2002, 01:35:51 pm »
Hey everybody I've been doing tons and tons of research and I can't find a clear definition of what arcadeos is.  I know it's a "front loader" but is it an actually Operating system I could run in dos, without windows?  I would love to hear from anybody and everybody about this.  This site rocks and everybodys examples have got me hooked!  Please help me out.  I'd love some emails about this (jimsdomain@hotmail.com) THanks again!!!

Jim

in a nutshell

its a dos frontend that it itself can run in funky screen resolutions that is designed to work well with just a joystick when needed.

So if your using an arcade monitor, its great!  You can run a few emulators (mame specifically, but a few others) at the arcade monitors resolution with a nice frontend

Just so you know. I used the dos version of mame to start off with along with arcadeos. Arcadeos is a great frontend but the 32 bit version of mame runs the games much better. I'd suggest using something like Raging Dragon, ArcadeFX or Emulaxian instead.

I agree... although aos is a stellar piece of software, it's really showing it's age.  I'm currently working on implementing some of it's more specialized features in rd.  It looks like I can do 90% of it via api calls so once I get them working I'll be glad to share the code with ed, pete, drake, and who-ever else wants it.

:D

What are the other features that AOS has that we don't?   Your code won't do me much good Howard but if I know what the feature are I might be able to add something similar.

Arcadeos is an arcade cabinet frontend  that works on pure dos (no windows required); it works best when used with vsycmame or advancemame.  These versions of mame require specific video cards to work correctly.  An ati radeon card is the best video card for vsycmame that I have found, and for advancemame I recommend the sis 6326.  A competing arcade cabinet frontend is advancemenu; it unlike arcadeos requires a specific video card as well (i again recommend the sis 6326 card for this front end).   Note: the agp sis 6326 video card will not work with p4 setups.
