OK Who is playing Elite Dangerous?
« on: April 06, 2015, 11:03:01 pm »
I bought the game last week and I have been remembering my old Acorn Electron days playing that game (I think it was around Christmas 1984?) until I found out there was a Galactic Warp bug, which was remedied by a nice revision on tape no less.  Still imagining the game again on the C64 with shaded graphics and docking music with Tribbles all over the screen, was great fun.

Roll on 2015 and we have real-time multi-player gaming and the same (well not really) ship we played  (dare I say it) 31 years ago.  Its freaking awesome and my AMD A10 laptop plays it very well.  I also sprung for voice attack and the game pack that adds voice commands to the game.

So how many of you are taking up the challenge to become Elite again, and what are your thoughts of the game so far?  What gear have you bought, and will it beat Star Citizen?  :o

The Electron? Elite? This is my sort of thread!

I didn't get Elite Dangerous primarily as I don't have a PC capable of running it. It was almost enough to force me into a long-overdue upgrade though. It still might.

I did feel it needed to move on from what Elite was a bit more though - the walk around the planet surface additions planned is more what I'm thinking. It does look incredible - how my imagination filled in all the wireframe graphics on the Electron... The multiplayer would also mean I'd get killed in seconds by a 12 year old in a darkened room - I could just about cope with a computer controlled Python ship.

@ark

Did you purchase it on Steam?  Its out on Steam now.

I was set up to play it in my basement, but changed things around so I haven't played it lately.  I've seen lots of posts on the facebook from people that play on a laptop.  My PC was getting long in the teeth and it played well on it.  They did a good job of a scalable experience that many users can enjoy.

I've been on the fence with this game, it's good to hear that it runs well on an A10... that's what I have as well.   I think I just may need to pull the triiger on it!

Nobody is playing it because they are too busy working on their setups to play it.

I've had it since the public Beta, It is cool. Runs well on my old core I5 laptop with integrated graphics.

I haven't had time to really get into it but the sheer scope of it is awesome...and it is pretty. It is near the top of my backlog...

But I have to run out of fun with World of tanks first.

I support your assessment.  Each time I've gone to play, something isn't quite right yet.  I suck as a pilot and to be honest I'm still in the training missions.  But it is great fun.

So I'm still calibrating the HOTAS, finding the best key bindings and wanting a better chair. Also, I don't know what do with my feet, but I'm not going after pedals unless another sweet deal lands in my lap.

I was hoping easter would bring an extra tablet so I could use one for this.  Those touchscreens look great when I seem them in others setups.

I'm not playing it yet, I simply don't have a powerful enuf PC. But I want to. I've been talking about Elite since I first played it back in 1985 on a friends Commodore 64. It was the game that got me into PC gaming. It was the first game I stayed up all night playing. Probably, overal, my favourite game of all time. I've enjoyed the clones, too: Privateer, X2 & 3, Freelancer (not so much). I've been waiting for the new version since Frontier. Looking forward to Star Citizen, too. It's definitely the first game I'll get when I upgrade.

Do you have win7x64?  4 gig of RAM?  What is your video card?  You might be surprised how it looks.

I thought it required a quad core?  That's what I read back before it launched...  Damn it.  <wanders off to re-read the website...>

I tried to run it on a dual core 8 GHz with a HD6770 and it works OK but I think there are background calculations going on thus the need for a quad core PC.  I have 8 GB of RAM but the client is 32 bit so you can run it in 2 GB of memory, which is a blessing and an issue.  The rest of the memory can be used as a RAM drive, so you can run Elite Dangerous without waiting for the HDD, unless you are using a SSD.

I'm still using my Logitech Extreme 3D, with voice commands, and it is simply awesome.  Voice Attack and the game packs are super cheap and they also work for Star Citizen.  I was one of the original backers for Star Citizen so I have a long wait before anything is fully working.  I hear that they have updated the SC client (another 2.8 GB download completed) but there are no optimisations, so unless your have a i7 with 2 R90s, you will have to crawl.

I'm also looking to do what this guy has done, but with two projectors but that cockpit is mighty tempting to build, even with some half inch MDF.....

If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

I bought it to play with VR but my graphic card cannot run it at the proper frame rate for VR. It looks cool though I will probably start playing it when I get a 980

Me that is who!.
I seem to of found spare time I never knew existed to play this game!
I certainly have not built anything this year and that`s not a complaint as I still enjoy the hell out of this game.
My waistline has definitely suffered though.
Funny thing is that before I would never of said I was a "gamer" :) .
