Author Topic: Clinton Taiwan/Matsushita Electric monitor question (CEUL5x9TE) [pics attached]  (Read 1863 times)

Greetings, all.  I lost my job last month, and while trying to find a new one I've been working on long-outstanding projects around the house.  Recently I helped a friend with some spring cleaning and came home with a Brother WP-510 word processor equipped with a small 5x9 monochrome monitor.  The unit did not work when I turned it on, although I did see screen flicker when I powered it on.  I disassembled the unit and removed the monitor and its chassis; photos of both are attached.   

I have a Tetris PCB that I've had for years and always wanted to use, but I don't have room for a third cabinet in my collection (I have an Arkanoid minicab and a Ms. Pac cocktail with a 48-in-1 board).  I do not have the required components for this project (power supply, harness, control panel items, etc.) - if this project is feasible, I can start working on that after I get a new job.

What I want to do is to use the Brother monitor with Tetris board.  I am aware that it's a monochrome monitor, so I do understand that if this does work the game will not be in color.  Although I'm fairly comfortable around electronics, basic soldering, and safe monitor/chassis removal (I've had Arkanoid recapped twice), wiring monitors is new to me.  That's why I figured I'd come here to ask for some advice.

Question #1 of 2: is there a chance this would work?  If yes, my main issue is getting guidance regarding how to connect the chassis to the JAMMA harness.  If no, I totally understand and no big deal. 

Several years ago I posted on rec.games.video.arcade.collecting and asked about the Tetris manual's mention of specific power requirements, and got "Reply #1" below.  Then this evening I saw something very similar, which I'll call "Reply #2" below.  Page 1-1 of the Tetris manual (I found a digital copy on http://basementarcade.com/arcade/library/manuals/t/) details the specific power requirements, which I detailed in my "Reply 1" post.

Question #2 of 2: Is "Reply #2" correct?  If yes, and I do not have to install a resistor (like "Reply #1" said), that's good to know.  Regardless, the last thing I want to do is damage the PCB, so I am ready to do whatever is required to best protect it.  To be honest, I'd really like an authentic Atari power supply, but I've just not been successful in finding one on eBay.

Thank you very much for reading, and for any help you can provide.  I'll list the info detailed in the photos below in case I fail to upload the photos correctly.  Again, if this project won't work I totally understand and am okay with recycling the monitor and scrapping the idea.  If more info and photos are needed please let me know.  Thanks again.

What I forgot to add was details regarding the wiring coming off the chassis that does not attach to the monitor itself.  Those are the 5 wires immediately to the left of the power lead.  The area on the chassis where these wires are connected are labeled 5 4 3 2 1, from left to right.  Wire colors are as follows below in case it's not visible in the photo.  If it's important, wires 1 & 2 (black & white, respectively) are wrapped together as a pair.  Thanks, and apologies for my oversight.

4 = blue
3 = orange
2 = white
1 = black

Basically I'm trying to figure out how to connect the JAMMA harness video connector to the chassis.  As you know, the white video connector on the JAMMA harness that connects to the monitor chassis has 5 wires (white for the prong that's slightly separated from the others, and then black, blue, green, and red; the attached "JAMMA" pic is one I found online for reference).  While the chassis for the Clinton/Matsushita monitor also has 5 wires, they're different colors from the JAMMA video connector. 

As detailed in the attached "wiring-comparo" pic, those chassis wires are black, then white, orange, blue, and black (reading from right to left according to the position #1 to #5 numbers printed on the chassis board).  I don't want to just connect these two sets of wires and "see what happens," as I really don't want to damage the PCB, the chassis, the CRT, or myself.   

Maybe connecting the white JAMMA harness video connector to the wires on the chassis is fine and will pose no problem.  If yes, I imagine knowing where which wire would go is important.  I have the Atari manual's JAMMA pinout (attached), but since I don't know what each of the chassis wires in positions 12345 are, or where they connect, I feel the monitor schematics would be helpful. 

Now maybe someone who knows black & white monitors like the back of their hand would know which chassis wires should be connected to which JAMMA video connector wires - if so, please let me know.  However, I can't imagine every black & white monitor was set up the same, so I understand that might be asking for an impossibility.  I reached out to Brother (the manufacturer of the word processor that used this monitor) and they suggested I contact my closest authorized Brother service center - when I did that they said the machine is simply too old and no repair info exists, which wasn't surprising.
