ATOM-15: Works, but boot is still distorted?
« on: March 20, 2015, 10:49:28 pm »
I have an ATI 4890 connected to a Crescendo TC1600 transcoder connected to a regular CRT TV.

I've used ATOM-15 to create a modified BIOS, and the BIOS flashes fine, but the Windows 7 boot process is still very distorted.  I think I can see a diagonal retrace and the screen flickers extremely bad.

Is it possible that my card is not compatible, or that I need modified 15.7 kHz settings?

I also have trouble with Atom-15 with my TV. The bios for my 4650 modified and flashed fine, but I get vertical roll on the TV at boot. Once Windows 7 takes over, all is good.

You might just need to adjust the vertical sync on the TV slightly.

The 15 kHz settings applied by ATOM-15 are quite standard. I'm assuming you only checked the 15 kHz box. What output are you using? Have you tried the other one?

Yeah, my card has 2x DVI and 1x S-VIDEO outputs (it's an ATI 4890 PCIe card).  I'm using a DVI-to-VGA adapter (passive) which then connects to the Crescendo TC1600 and finally outputs component video to the TV.

I've tried both DVI outputs with ATOM-15 and both produce the same result. :(

Also, you are correct that I only checked the 15 kHz checkbox (and I double-checked and reflashed the BIOS, etc, just to make sure)

It'd be good to test with another monitor to discard a problem with the video card/atom-15. It could be just that the timings generated by ATOM-15 are not accepted by either the transcoder or the TV. Maybe the transcoder is not able to produce a working composite sync signal out of the separate sync signals. I remind I had to force all bios sync polarities to negative otherwise it wouldn't work on some arcade monitors.

Unfortunately, I literally don't have any other CRTs in the house.

Could I use ArcadeOSD to test the resolution/signal that ATOM-15 is sending?

No, that's not possible.

Also, I'm assuming the Windows 7 boot screen you're seeing is the old Vista style boot screen that gets activated automatically when the bios is flashed, not the usual Windows 7 boot screen, isn't it?
