J-Pac for converting Jamma cabinet to Mame - Advise

OK guys I'm relatively new to the scene but no stranger to technology in general.

Want to make sure I'm on the right track though.

I have an old Galaga cabinet which currently has a 60 in 1 Jamma Board installed and a Lenovo LCD Monitor. The cabinet only has two buttons so I ordered a 3rd button as well as a 412 in 1 Jamma Board as it had a couple games I would like to play (QBert and Mikie for example).

I have previous experience with Mame but always ran it on my desktop or laptop when I wanted a classic gaming fix. I'm now thinking however of converting the Galaga Cabinet to a Mame Cabinet. My current plan is as follows:

a) Pick up an off lease PC that is capable of running Mame
b) Grabbing a J-Pac to control it (seems like the easiest option)
c) Using freedos and a dos based mame front end to control things.

Anybody see any issues with what I'm planning on doing or know of any gotchas I may encounter?

Hi Darryl, sounds like a good plan mate. All my mame and multi emulator Multicades use a Jpac when converting a all jamma arcade. However I do use Hyperspin as my frontend and run a windows base version of mame around version 1.42. But lots of front ends and mame options out their. Choose the one you know best.

Funny you mention HyperSpin.

I already had Mame and downloaded Hyperspin to check it out. Have both Mame & Daphne configured and running just fine with Hyperspin on my desktop PC so now just have to get the third button installed in the cabinet and get the j-pac ordered.

The only issue I might still have is the fact that the cabinet has an LCD monitor installed vertically. Not sure if this will be an issue or not but I'll get it figured out.
