NAVC - Not Another Vewlix Clone
« on: February 26, 2015, 10:57:57 am »

Fresh off my Sega Genesis bartop build i'm feelin the itch again. (never really went away) Since I don't have a completed man cave yet, i'm doing the next best thing; helping my best friend build his fullsize.

We started off with a hybrid design based on griff's MvC revolution. You know without all of the fancy dual screens and whatnot. However he really got turned onto the vewlix style cabs so I made a hybrid of a few designs and this is what I came up with. Still a vewlix style clone, but not...

The details on top of the control panel are really just ideas for some extra flair. Maybe to put some of the start/coin buttons. I'm working on finalizing the design and when we start to thaw out (Ohio has a few more days left to lock down the record for the coldest February in recorded history  :banghead: I'll break out the router and saws.

Basic requirements are typical, however he really doesn't want a trackball. He's definitely a fighter guy so street fighter > golden tee or centipede in his world. 2 players with 6-buttons each in street fighter style are really the only things required.

Feeling your pain on the weather here in Michigan.  I haven't seen a single blade of grass since November.   I'm really itching to chop up some MDF.

Eff you, snow.

You made the right decision there.

Working out a few of the design kinks.

1st pic. I didn't want to have the plexi for the monitor cover the entire surface so i split the speaker panel into it's own section. The problem with this is that there is no place for the plexi to attach at the top. I can't create a recess to slide into if i'm doing the flush fit all around. If i changed it from being flush with the side panels, i could probably pull it off, but that wouldn't look as cool with the chamfers.

2nd pic. the marquee area is suffering from the same dilemma. Unless i bring the top of the speaker panel up to create a small ledge for the plexi to sit on, i'm not sure what to do here where the plexi meets the speaker panel. maybe I can cut the speaker panel and have the plexi slide down behind it. if i get the angles right, then that should be pretty clean but that's a very extreme angle...

I assume at least there will be something behind the plexi?  could you glue some flat metal stock to the back of the plexi and use magnets to hold it in place?  or are you going full see through.

yea, I have a this piece of wood as a bezel that frames the monitor. Magnets could be cool specially if i end up painting the plexi to blend in. I can then hide the metal behind the painted sections. The plexi will be pinned in by the CP so that will help keep it in place as well.

Finally got some MDF and started laying out the outlines. Holy God 3/4 MDF sheets are heavy! I need to saw some pieces off of that bad boy so I can get it up on a stand to work with it. The picture is hard to make out, but just posting that I'm finally starting to work on this bad boy.
