AMD and NVIDIA in same PC?
« on: February 15, 2015, 05:49:07 pm »
I've recently caught the retro gaming bug after a 2 year hiatus and need to scratch that 15khz itch.

I'm running an NVIDIA GTX 970 on a multi PCI-e mobo so just bought a USMA card + EDID dongle to use with a Samsung CRT TV.

I installed XP to dual boot alongside 7 and installed soft-15khz, but the image is garbled, I can see lots of colourful horizontal lines, but this isn't my main question as I've hardly begun troubleshooting. It's a very convoluted setup; DVI-VGA adapter to EDID Dongle to VGA cable (high quality) to UMSA card to SCART cable (very high quality) to CRT TV, I've tried both sync jumper settings on the UMSA.

Anyway, my main question is this: could I scrap all these devices and just stick a Radeon card in the second PCI-e slot, removing the NVIDIA drivers for CRT-Emu-Driver? It seems unlikely, but would save me a lot of hassle. I could use the VGA-SCART cable I made a few years back and when in windows 7 I'll use the NVIDA with my LED display and leave the AMD card in the second slot without installing the AMD drivers...

Please let me know your thoughts, thanks

Wow, what a popular thread!

Anyway, for anyone else in the same boat, I ended up installing CRT emu drivers x64 in windows 7 alongside the NVIDIA drivers.

I have my hdtv connected to the GTX 970 for modern applications and the CRT connected to the Radeon 4350 for retro gaming and it's working surprisingly well, no need to dual boot anymore!

Some concerns however, quickres is useless now so I must use ArcadeOSD to switch res or I can, of course, set the res within whichever emulator I'm running.
Also, I notice a performance impact in modern games unless I disable the secondary display which isn't a big deal.

If anyone knows how to set an app to open fullscreen on the CRT without setting it as primary display I'd love to learn how.

Thanks

Ah. I created an account just to message this guy but it seems my newly registered account isn't blessed with the power to message people just yet. This sort of forces me to bump this thread.

for anyone else in the same boat

I believe we are in the same boat. I heard your call in my trusty search engine. Pleased to meet you.

Shipmate, I have a question for you. Just like you I have a computer with a GTX970 that I wish to connect to a CRT. However, unlike you I do not desire to buy a separate GPU for the CRT. I'm happy to have just one GPU. I do wonder if it with an EDID dongle, Soft-15kHz and some breakout cables is possible to connect the CRT to the GTX970 without the need to have a second GPU. Have you tried this? I can live with switching on my PC when I want to play arcade games on my CRT. Can you tell me about your setup?

Thank you.

For that reason there exists QuickRes2 ( http://files.arianchen.de/soft15khz/quickres2.zip )

As for the Performance bump... well most modern games sadly don't really run in real fullscreen, and hence parts of the "window" end up on the second adapter :(

If anyone knows how to set an app to open fullscreen on the CRT without setting it as primary display I'd love to learn how.
"some" advanced software allows you to  explicit choose which display to use ( MAME does for example ) - but most casual software will always use the "default".

you can try http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/multi_monitor_tool.html - though I don't know if this works on win 8 and up.

As a side note... the initial question reminds me of something...
