NES emulator 15khz
« on: February 10, 2015, 09:05:55 am »
So what's the best NES emulator these days? I need to be able to run under XP in a low res mode like 256x240 or 256x256.

Also I'd like to try out NES Elite. I seem to recall this game didn't work properly in all the emulators I tried in the past.

Any tips would be great!

I haven't used it much, but GroovyMess seems to work really well with arcade monitors.  I also use Nestopia, but am starting to migrate towards GroovyMess as I confirm more and more games are working and displaying at the correct resolution..

Nestopia would be your best bet. I'm using it in native resolution on winXP 64 and it works perfectly.

I keep saying it, and I'll say it again. UME is the end game for emulation. It's simply the best, most stable emulator core. It runs smoothly and feels good. Every other emulator is inadequate by comparison whether it's stuttering, input lag, instability, poor device support, etc.

For any platform that's emulated decently by MESS or MAME, GroovyUME is easily the best solution for a CRT monitor setup.

Even though BSNES is technically better than MESS's emulation, I'll STILL use UME/MESS over BSNES for any SNES game that doesn't have extra hardware because UME/MESS are that much better as programs.

I agree that MESS is nice to use and I've had good success with it on arcade monitors even not in the normal, non-Groovy build.

That said, as a lot of the emulation is far from complete it is not always the best solution. Seems to me the NES emulation is not quite there. I actually do use MESS at the moment (granted not the latest version) and keep finding emulation issues.

I will give Nestopia a try...

Thanks!

Being a user of 15khz CRT setup myself i would say FCEUX is the best Nes Emulator for me. This runs Happily under Winxp, 15khz, and can use native resolution. Has very good Nes emulation. and Also when in 640x480 Desktop /15khz) the menu for Setting up the emulator fits the screen nicely. Fceux also supports Directdraw for low input lag on a CRT setup. And the emulator can be used with other frontends like Mala without any problems. And is also been recently updated so the Emulator development is still Alive. ;)

Thanks for the info - I will give that one a go too!

Nestopia Undead Edition is the best but some windows, options will not fit in 640x480.

So, not sure what the problem is but I can't get fceux to do anything at all - no error messages, but just doesn't seem to run.

However Nestopia works well. Setup the controller, screen resolution to 256x256 and switched on vsync. Seems very good, finally was able to play Elite!...

Thanks for the heads up. I had a read through the changes and it sounds good. I did notice that it felt like the controls were ever so slightly less responsive in the standard build with vsync enabled. I will give this build a go!

Just in case anyone else tries to do this in future, when I run the 'Undead Edition' I get an error:

'The procedure entry point EncodePointer could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll.'

I believe this is as I'm running XP SP1 - from what I've read upgrading to SP2 should fix it...considering whether I want to do that...

Works fine on XP x32 SP3 and XP x64 SP2 but DirectX update might be needed.

Yeah I thought that. I'm on DirectX 9b, think it might need 9c. I'm a bit apprehensive doing that when everything else works ok...

Actually only some libraries might be needed. Another solution is manually copy needed libraries in Nestopia directory.

I actually had to upgrade to SP3 for another reason, which also updated DX to 9c. Nestopia UE was still missing d3dx9_43.dll so I just bunged that file in there. Works a treat and (touch wood) no other problems due to the SP/DX upgrade.  ;D
