Replacement non-polar/Bipolar capacitors.
« on: February 09, 2015, 10:53:29 am »
I'm looking for a source for some non-polar/bipolar electrolytic capacitors used in arcade monitors.

I'm looking for 1uF in a  200 and/or 350 volt non polarized / bipolar capacitors. would need some of each voltage to fix a few monitors.

Since these caps are used typically in this high voltage configuration for CRT monitors, they are no longer being manufactured by a lot of companies and not being carried by a lot of the parts sellers (mouser etc.)

I've contacted all the electronic part resellers in the city and everybody has either, run out of stock and is no longer available, or carries lower voltage  (50v and under) capacitors.

I've attempted contacting a couple companies touted by "G-Luxon" (original maker of the cap) as  distributors for them, but they have not contacted me back.

Does anybody know of possibly a hole in the wall parts place around them that may have stock...or an online store (short of alibaba) that would have these? I'd consider purchasing 50-100 units of each depending on the price, shipping, exchange. (shipping to canada)

EDIT: accidentally a word

yes i didn't see any loose ones listed but he does have a NT500 kit, so i've inquired if the kit includes these caps.

lilshawn:

What chassis & part locations. I can likely dig up substitutes for you.

i have a few actually...

Neotec NT500DX - on the neckboard they are 1uF 200/250 volt non polar (i've seen both voltages used on various neckboards so either 200 or 250 will work)

and

Makvision M2929D - 1uF 350volt nonpolar

each neckboard requires 3 caps (one for each color)

I heard back from Bob Roberts and he said the kits he sells don't contain the bipolar caps and "I wouldn't even know where to find something like that."  :dunno

I'm trying to contact:

Jaro Electonics
and
EWElectronics

both listed by G-Luxon as distributors for G-luxon (the original manufacturer of the caps used on the NT500)

i've as of current. I've heard nothing back from them.

Not sure if I missed it but have you tried
Jameco, mouser, Newark, Digikey and Allied?

There's a place here in CT called Park Distributers.
They're in Bridgeport CT. They're part of a larger national distribution. Give them a call. I believe they'd ship also

yep, checked with all them. no bipolar/nonpolar at all or they have 50v and under in bipolar.

checked NTE, only have nonpolar up to 100v

http://www.parkdistributors.com/ only lists a couple nonpolar caps up to 100v I may give them a call, they may be able to search their inventory better than me. Thanks for the lead.

I've contacted G-Luxon in china directly, i'll see if i can get anywhere with them.

thanks for the lead...still on the hunt.

You can make a non-polar electrolytic. You need two regular (polarized) electrolytics of double the UF value but the same desired voltage.

For instance: you need a 1 uf @ 250 volts.

Get TWO of 2.2 uf @ 250 volts polarized.

You will connect the two capacitors in series: the two negative leads will be soldered together. That will leave you with two seperate positive leads which will now be your new "Non-polar" capacitor. Connecting capacitors in series cuts their uf value in half, so now you have your 1 uf @ 250 volt capacitor. Granted it will take up more physical space than the original non polar one did, but electrically it will work. This is an old technician's trick.

Thank you!

I wanted to post about that. I've seen it in some old schematics and described in some old books but since I never tried it myself wasn't sure about the validity of the technique in this application.

yes, i'd thought about something like that and did do a quick google about it last week.

i was unsure if it was still relevant or if the high voltages / frequencies used would blow it up or not, as it was quite a dated page i'd brought up (hand drawn schematic and all)

if all else fails, i'll have to take a stab at this. thanks ken.
