sony monitor not working
« on: January 25, 2015, 08:03:36 pm »
I just bought a sony pvm-20n6u rgb monitor and it arrived not working. I am planning to use this with consoles and my supergun as well.

When i turn it on it degausses and the tube comes on but no picture. it glows at the neck and i can see a thin green line in the middle of the screen. I can also feel static on the front of the tube it makes the hair on my arm stand up.

It seems that the hv stuff is working, but I never get any osd come up telling me what input im on. when i hit the input select buttons it does nothing when i try to bring up the menu it does nothing.

Any ideas on what i should look at first?

sounds like a vertical collapse,it could be just bad solder joints or it may be a fault in the vertical deflection circuit itself
do you have a photo of the screen showing the line?

Hmm. I think id lean towards a bad solder joint. This monitor was shipped a long way.

Thanks. If a vertical collapse, where should i be looking on the A board for it?

I have a service manual but i can only make so much sense out of it.

I cant really do much at all until i find my HV probe. I havent seen it since i moved.

The line doesnt come out. Its 1 pixel tall and goes all the way across the screen horizontally. its right in the center.

Thanks for answering my question. I looked for vertical deflection collapse and i found an interesting tv repair site that shows what it is. its exactly what my monitor is doing. the tv repair site also says that its very common for the vertical deflection solder to bust loose because the ic gets so hot during normal operation.

I guess the shipping just sped up an already failing joint.

Well, I finally got the new HV probe i had to order, and i now have the board out and i know exactly why the vertical is collapsed.

There is a large crack on the pcb that runs along every pin on the large IC on the A board.

With that said, here is a pic of it. This is a bit more than i want to try and repair. is there someone out there that would take this repair on?

what would it cost? I dont think this monitor should need any parts it was working before it was shipped and its very low use. Id like to keep it if i can.

Ive highlighted the crack in red.

Ouch, that crack hurts....

If that was me, I would probably try to find a replacement board. Since it is Trinitron you can't just buy any generla china-board unfortunately...

But, it is of course probably doable, to rewire every broken lead - but it would demand a lot of effort.

I did look for a replacement and the only place i could find one forsale wants $350.00 for it. thats way more than i paid for the monitor.

I did notice something later that should make this somewhat easier to repair if you can call it easy.

This board is only 1 sided there are no traces on top.
