How to get rid of smoke smell?

I just bought a laptop for some classic gaming action and it positively reeks of cigarette smoke--anyone know of a way to get that out of electronics?  I can feel my lungs constricting just smelling it

  I bought a camera from an obviously avid smoker on ebay a while ago and it wreaked of Eternal Stench of Cigarette Smoke.. It took a good month or so, but just letting it air out eventually worked.

  They make air freshener specifically for cigar/cigarette smokers, but I've had limited success with those (I'm a cigar smoker).  Two Guys Smoke Shop near me (in NH) sells some aerosol stuff "with fresh Citrus Scent!" and candles that seem to help.

A surface cleaner like Simple Green or 409. I smoke, so my computer cases tend to get that brown buildup over time. Every so often I take them apart and give the pieces a bath in a 50/50 mix of Greased Lightning and water.

You do realize that the smell of old cigarette smoke cannot hurt you in any way, right?

Which is something I have to try to explain every year when we have the Baptist convention people stay at the hotel, and they reserve the suites for their "Bishops" (Bishop IS NOT a Baptist title, and every Baptist "Bishop" is self appointed). Of course the suites ALWAYS smell like smoke, and they always act like they are going to get lung cancer or something from it. (Meanwhile I always catch their kids around back smoking pot).

Anyway, I never even could smell smoke anyway, couldn't smell it before I started smoking, couldn't smell it after, wasn't able to smell it the periods that I quit for a few months, and can't smell it now.

I think maybe your nasal passages have been damaged  

I knew that it doesn't harm in anyway but neither does the smell of cow manure but I wouldn't want that smell pumping out of my PS fan either.  Does this grease lightning stuff safe for circuit boards and the like or just metal and plastic?  I would hate to etch some new circuit paths

Smokers do not understand how bad the stench of cigarette smoke is to non-smokers. Its particularly irratating to me because I grew up in a house where mom smoked almost non-stop. I can't handle sleeping in a smoked in hotel room. Its not that its going to hurt me or cause lung cancer, it just stinks.

Smokers are always talking about their right to give themselves lung cancer what about my right to not have smell it? You can't claim that cigarettes don't hurt you. Even the cigarette companys admit it.

As for the TOPIC AT HAND, the problem with getting a cab that has been sitting an a bowling alley or bar forever is that the cab stinks. I would recommend scrubbing the outside, stripping the inside and giving it a nice coat of paint (not kidding). I spray painted the inside of a foul smelling cab and now the stinkiness is down to a minimum.

OR, just don't buy cabinets that smell like smoke.

As for the laptop, you could have done worse. This is why I don't do business on EBAY and the like. You just don't know what you are getting. I prefer to see what I am buying before hand, or I trust that the seller ir reputable and will sell goods in acceptable condition.

Well I disaassembled this sucker down to the magnesium frame (isn't magnesium volatile in water?)  Cleaned and reassembled and it does smell better--you have to have your nose on the keyboard to pick up the stench now.  Thanks for the input all the same--Considering the environments to which our hobby normally lives in, I'm surprised this doesn't come up more.  I guess its like coke spills and cigarette burns on the CP, you b$tch, you fix, you move on...

I think you're thinking of Sodium being volatile in water.  Magnesium will still burn under water, however... or so the Jr. High Science teacher said.

It's probably not pure magnesium, but an alloy of some sort.

Apparently there is a probalem with pure magnesium and water.

Ugh I know the smell you are talking about. I just got three "golden mini" counter top poker machines. That were in storage for 8yrs. One of the machines when opened up stinks up the room with stale smoke smell. The insides are yellow from the intake cooling fan. One really reeking smell is from my computer tower. Six months ago the power supply went out with a blue flash and a loud bang and a large puff of smoke. If the system is left off for a few days and then switched on. The smell comes back for a few secs. Nothing against smokers I smoked for 24yrs and quit 5yrs ago. But when I visit my folks who are still pack a dayers. I really notice the smell on my clothes when I get home.

Exactly.  Powdered magnesium was often used in the old days as the flash for photography.  

Nowadays, it's used in "flash pots" for stage effects and such.  Bright flash and lots of smoke.
