monitor heat and questions
« on: December 08, 2014, 02:20:22 pm »
Hello,

I have a 21" computer monitor crammed into a cabinet and I have a couple questions about it.

The first question is about the front of the monitor. Does there need to be a minimum amount of space between the screen at the front and the front glass? Because of the size of this monitor I have reduced the amount of space between the glass and the screen in attempts to get the entire monitor into the cab so it doesn't hang out the back.  Does this pose any problems I may be unaware of?

Next question about the back of the monitor. The monitor is really close to the back of the cabinet. If I could I would prefer not to modify the back with a bump or something to allow for more space but I will if its the difference between a safe cabinet and one that is going to burn my house down. I attached an image of the back of the monitor. What are those gold coloured things at the back? Can I push the back panel against that or can it not be touched? Does this section of the monitor produce a lot of heat?  Enough to create heat issues if it was close to the wooden back? How about electricity? Does this pose any risk to people playing the game if the back panel was pushed against it?

Sorry for what may seem basic questions. I don't know much about monitors or how they work. I would appreciate any help you can provide.

1: No, I would recommend NOT having the glass of the monitor and the glass of the front touching. vibrations will have them eat each other and form a nasty scratch mark.

2: looks like just a ground tabs that probably went to a shield covering the inside of the monitor cabinet. no big deal. leave them, bend them,  or cut them off if you like.

3: wood does not conduct electricity unless it's wet or you have a really high voltage going into it. non issue. as long as you don't plan on playing this outside in the rain or standing in a bathtub full of water, i'm sure there won't be an issue.

as long as the bug suction cup and it's wire isn't touching anything metal where it might rub through the insulation, everything should be good.

just re-read my response to the first question and may have caused confusion...

no, it's not an issue if they are close, but don't have them touch. if need be, insert some thin strips of wood on either side of the glass to hold it out.

Thanks for the reply. I did exactly that. I added two 2" strips of wood to bump out the monitor a bit. I also took the router and removed some of the thickness in the back panel near the back of the monitor. I can now get the back panel on and the monitor still should have some breathing space.
