Setting up software
« on: March 05, 2002, 04:52:01 am »
Ok, I finally have all the stuff I need for my cab.  I'm configuring the computer now and will be running it in my cab in no time.  I just wanted to look around for suggestions for people who have a similar setup.  I'm running on a 25" tv using a scan converter.  I think I'm going to use arcadeFX as my front end.  As far as mame options go, what do I need to configure?  Will most games just run fine at default?  I've read so much about stretchmame and all kinds of other stuff.  I just want to hear about some other people's software setups that are using tv's.  I also need to be able to configure spinner and trackball games.  I have two spinners and one trackball.  Thanks.

For the spinners, when the game starts press Tab. Then go down to Analog Controls.  Sensitivity I set between 120 - 140% depending on the game. For the Speed I set this to 1.  Try these as see if you like them.  If not adjust them to your liking.

If you do plan to use AFX you can set most of the other MAME config settings in the admin section.

About using the 25'' TV.  It depends on how good your picture is but some people have a hard time reading some of the text.  Let me know what you find you with your setup.

This is where I think JFront will (because I haven't released anything for a bit) be better then ArcadeFX.  I was trying to talk Ed into implementing this, but he couldnt until he added the database stuff.. So hopefully he will

I copy mame.cfg's around based on the game information.  So, you can configure (the default configure) for all 4-way games once.

this is important for me in a few things.  I have a 4 player cabinet.  But most 2 player games,  I want player 2 as player 1 and player 3 as player 2 (so you aren't playing off to the side).  So I can configure all my player 4 games one way and all my player 1,2,3 games another.  Also special setup for 4way games (up,notleft, notright settings).  doublejoysticks settings, ect.

I also am adding a whole different configuration for different control panels.  So you can switch to your classic control panel, and it will use my 4way joystick, but if I'm running my defualt control panel it will run the up,notleft, notright mame setup.

But until it's released, I'm only talking :)

I've played with Ed's fe on my tv, and even with s-video out, the status text is WAY to small to read.  That and the fact that he only supports mame are my only complaints about afx though.  Still a great program, it just seems to be designed with computer monitors in mind.

Hey lilwolf that sounds pretty sweet man, you've gotta show me how your doing that. (I think I know though.)
