I think I just found my inspiration..
« on: December 16, 2003, 04:21:17 pm »
..for a cocktail cab. Ive already done a convert of a cabinet, and I dont have the space to build a standup from scratch(but that may be project #3 :))

I was digging around KLOV for another thread and clicked on Joust for kicks. Found this pic of the cocktail, and realized Id never seen one like this. I dunno if there was a regular 2 sided joust, but I kinda doubt it since it was simultaneous play.

I really like the looks of this, as its unlike most all of the cocktails out there.

I mostly do single player so there may be some retooling to make it more 1up friendly, maybe knock outthat center piece right below the monitor, and extend the CP from edge to edge. Center some stuff..

I hadnt really thought of a 1 sided cocktail before, since most of the guys on here that build em go with the traditional 2player(or even 4) style, so thats what all the examples are of

Didnt know if this was a common cab or not, but its definitely somehting to consider if youre looking for an alternative to a boxy cocktail

I have heard that they only made around four hundred like that. I have seen a few sell on ebay the past months , i was thinking on trying to make one also , because i like space duels and that would work for both games. I have a older cocktail ( the two players play on the long sides of the cab ) that i want to try to convert , it is a Greyhound video , which on KLOV they only have a greyhound poker , maybe i should take a photo before i convert it , and send it to them.

That will take up more room than an upright.

I had the chance to purchase one that had been badly converted.  It has such a large footprint that I decided to build a Robotron Cocktail instead.

Despite the rumors, Joust cocktails are far from rare. The production run was more like 750, and 750 is a HUGE number for a cocktail.

Personally I rank them as the third most common cocktail.

1. Midway cocktails. Lots of these around
2. School desk cocktails. These would probably be the most common, but they are more likely to be junked than midway ones.
3. Joust

The only other common cocktail style would be the Atari Football/Dunk Shot/Tekhan World Cup island style.

There are many other types, but they are actually pretty hard to find (Cinematronics, etc).

I've been trying to track down someone with access to one of those cab's that could provide me with full dimensions for it so I could draw up plans for everyone.  They are sorta hard to find.  And then trying to find someone who will actually take the time to measure it is ever tougher...

One of my local buddies has had a couple of them in the past few years, but he doesn't have any at the moment.

Anyway, who needs plans, just build it by ear. Use the Robotron cocktail plans as a guide, and modify from there.

I thought edgedamage had one--he took pictures of one at the very least--might be worth a shot--if I was building a cocktail, it would be one of those!
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

I love playing Joust...
You can play it online (Midway actually has it up on their site!)

I'm MAS on the high score list...  :)

Anyhow, just play it a little... To kill the apponents, your lance must be higher than theirs when you collide. Then pick up the eggs that fall.  Thats it... In the online version, left & right arrows make you move & the space bar flaps your wings.

Play! Enjoy! Eat my Giant bird droppings!
I'm not a freak!...
Oh wait...
Yes I am...

This is just MHO, but Joust is waaaaaaaaaay better than Pacman.  But I always thought the entire Pacman genre was over-rated.

Joust, Defender, and Robotron were *the* games down at my local grocery store when I was about 12 years old.  I never thought about it at the time, but apparently the grocery store had some kind of exclusive deal to only have Williams machines...   :)

I've always enjoyed joust.
I own a joust upright that my boys and I used to jam on. I picked it up for fifty bucks. The p.s. had a bad rectifier in it and the guy that sold me the machine gave me a new one to fix it. But it hasn't been working for a couple of years. Hopefully, with some of the knowledge I've gotten from this site, I'll be able to fix it this spring. Either that, or I may do a williams six game conversion.
