1986 Cougar Valley Dart Board Advice (No Power)
« on: November 06, 2014, 09:39:15 pm »
Hey Everyone,  been a while since I have been on here, used to build Mame Cabinets but not for a while now.  Anyways I picked up this 1986 Valley Cougar Dart Board that had no power on the cheap.  Figured it would be a little project.

So i get it home notice that the power cord was spliced/frayed,  so first thought was i cut the bad part of the cord off,  patch it into a good one which ive done many times in the past with various things.   That did not help.  I used a multimeter to make sure I was getting 120 to the inside of the cab and I was so that part is good now.

Next thing I thought was maybe the power switch,  so i jumped that,  went directly from hot to hot/neutral to netural, etc.   That did not help either.  Multimeter shows 120 all the way to solid state relay.

Next i felt for loose connections,  I wiggled just slightly the one that is on part A03-0-00-00 according to the manual (solid state relay circuit board) and it basically fell off.  So i took that board out,  carefully resoldered the clip in,  waited for it to cool and dry for 10 minutes or so.  it was now solid again, no extra solder around connections.   I took it back to the dartboard, plugged and mounted everything back in.   plugged it back in,  and it booted up perfectly ,  to my amazement EVERY little detail was working perfectly, all bulbs, games, sounds, buttons,  i couldnt find even one thing wrong.  Even the coin mechs worked.

So I played a few games of cricket testing everything.  Then shut it down.  put the power switch back into play, mounted then tested it,  back to no power now.  Ok so im thinking switch might be bad after all,  i jumped switch again, put it back to the way it was when it was working,  and still nothing.

Ive spent 3 days now trying to figure this out,  ALL fuses test good with multimeter,  the 3 fuses i could find anyway.  And I still have 120 volts where i expect to see it inside.

And just to add,  the rest of this board and cabinet was clean as a whistle for being so old, no smoke damage or anything, all connections clean, no rust, no corrosion,  impressive really.  Even the artwork was almost perfect.

Any help is appreciated....Thank you!!!!

I have a Valley Cougar SM that I plan on checking the voltages going to the PCB.  I have a friend with a Valley Cougar 8 that needs a power supply.  Going to see if I can put something together to get it to work.

Did you have any luck fixing the power supply?
