Nevermind I got the "effect" I was looking for, I turned the sharpness all the way down on the tv, looks better!!

I think you should only adapt the in game picture quality (using HLSL or a hardware scan generator) and let your frontend benefit from the HD quality of your screen.

if you are using .106 try out advmame.
I use that on older hardware.
it does scanlines & has some nice scaling filters.

HLSL looks fantastic... after using it I wish I could get that exact effect on every emulator I use.

I used this guide: http://www.videogameperfection.com/2014/07/27/hlsl-for-everyone/ and then I set the pincushion to 0 as I'm not a fan of that effect.

Is there a reason you're using .106 instead of the newer builds?

Not to derail the thread but have you seen the stuff Jezz did? The main advantage of his Post.fx mod is that you don't need to change the shadow_mask_?_count for each game to keep the right ratio; It figures it out of you. Plus some other goodies which you may or may not care about:
http://www.aep-emu.de/PNphpBB2-file-viewtopic-t-18991.html
(it's in German, so use your favorite translator if you don't speak/read German)

Also, there has been some buzz about Timothy Lottes' shader. It uses GLSL (SDL/OpenGL), so you have to use an SDL build of mame. But, it might be of interest to you. Although, not a real CRT emulation, it looks pretty darn good. Here is a thread about it:

Cheers!

That's pretty neat, I'll check it out, though at this point I'm mostly looking for what I can do to make stuff outside of MAME and MESS not look like crap.
