Why are all of my local deals like this?

Yeah. $2,000 for a TMNT cab that needs work. Totally reasonable. Like that guy in Tuscaloosa that is slowly destroying his Dragon's Lair 2 cabinet until someone pays him $1000 for it.

Dont feel bad man.  I went on craigslist for a $150 gutted Nintendo cab.  The poster said they would be willing to pay less.  I offered $125 and the guy got goofy.  He told me to stay off of craigslist and the next day the cab was @ "$250 solid."  So no its not just you.  The main problem with craigslist is that its person to person.  So you get what people think something is worth without any safety measures in place.  Oh well.  Let them keep posting and looking like fools.

Sorry pbj.  I meant to say he would take less if it was offered to him.  He threw a fit when I offered him $25 less.  Told me I insulted him.  The guy was a little off.

I hate when people list things for $1 and then change the price when you call.

I had a lady offering this:
"Arcade Parts

condition: new
arcade game parts female connectors for arcade game repair builders .
what ever its worth come take it all. There are 2000 on a roll"

If I'm reading this right, she's giving this away, no?  However, when I contacted her, she said it wasn't for sale for just $1 and that she wanted someone to make an offer.  I pointed out that she needed to re-word it to make it clear.  She never revised the listing.  Oh well...

I think that it is just a little frustratting to me when I see all those KLOV posts about what they find on Craiglists, and then I see what I find there.  Especially this one, as I would love to have that game, but not at that insane price.

I feel like when people say "make me an offer" they should be saying "make me an offer because Im too lazy to do research to find out the value."  I try to stay away from craigslist and only bid to what something is worth on ebay and never get into a crazy bidding war and over paying for something I probably shouldnt buy in the first place.  Chances are Ill get a better deal anyway when another one shows up 2 weeks later.

These people aggrevate me when they bid on something on ebay like its the last one on earth.  Amazon is getting bad with people over pricing on their stores.  Whatever.

....as I would love to have that game, but not at that insane price.

Thats why I built my FFJR cab.  With the wealth of information on the net along with parts you can create a replica for 1/4 of the price.  And youre not paying for something that isnt worth what the person selling it thinks its worth.

Agreed. CL should have a rule about putting $1 in the listing title.

I sent an email to the guy asking about it, and said I didn't mean to come off as insulting, but $2000 was a bit high.  Let's see if he replies.

A few general rules have served me well with Craig's List

No pic = not buying

Phone number unable to receive texts = not buying

If I don't like your price = not haggling and not buying

Make me an offer = don't bother

Can't meet me on Saturday morning = don't bother (conversely, if you're selling and the buyer isn't showing up first thing Saturday morning, 100% he's going to flake out and blame 'the wife')

Perhaps those first two are a bit much, but the sort of people that do not have a cell phone with a camera on it are the sort of people that do not possess anything I want to buy.  My mentally handicapped janitor has a smart phone.  My last few deals haven't involved a single spoken word until I showed up in person.

Those guys on various forums that can swoop in at a moment's notice during business hours and scoop up those great deals are all unemployed layabouts defrauding disability and/or live with their parents.

Wise rules to live by!

If I think a guy is too high but is fishing for offers, I take what I learned from PinballJim (RIP) and I shoot them an email saying "Look, I have $XXX cash-in-hand. If you don't get your asking price and want to sell, you have my number." Four times I used that, and I usually got a reply accepting my offer within a day.

My own 50 year old mother bought a Side Kick back when that was all there was.

I find it tough to believe that a person is smart enough to post on CL, but not smart enough to use said phone to snap pictures nor receive texts? Phone companies practically make it impossible to have a cell phone without text. ::)

There are several self employed guys in this area that snap up everything on CL within 4 hours.  Lots of stuff goes within 1 hour.  There are deals here to be had for sure but nobody else can get any of them.  The same 3-4 guys buy them all because they're on CL 24/7 and show up immediately.  There was a working Tempest mini for like $150 last week and it was gone in less than an hour.  Not a deal pending, mind you, it was already picked up.  Everything here is like that.

That's some strange ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---. I don't think I've ever seen anyone use that method before. At least not in my neck of the woods. I don't get it.

My guess is that marquee got accidentally broken and he's just screwing around.  I'd love to be proven wrong on this.

There's a harsh reality that many 'high end' arcade game collectors have been denying for many years, but it's time has come.  There are no new people that want a Dragon's Lair 2 in their house, and there never will be.  Anybody that REALLY wants one already has it or owned it awhile and kicked it down the line.  Sure, it'll retain novelty value ($500) but at $1,000-$2,000 I bet you're looking at a handful of buyers these days.  It all started with those $10 TV joysticks - I can remember the Ms PacMan bubble bursting instantly.

For those who can't get the deals on CL because the item is sold within the hour: why not get an app on your phone that alerts you when an ad goes up containing your search terms?

I had one setup for pinball and arcade. As soon as an ad went up containing either word, I got a notification on my phone.

That wont help with trying get to the location before the other guy, but at least you'll know when someonething is posted.

Well, we get a post about Arcades maybe once or twice a month in my general area(IE the entire state plus Atlanta) that aren't people advertising their custom game building services.

Well that's the thing, isn't it?  Why get a notification on the phone if you can't get there that quickly?  The rest of us who need to finish off the workday aren't going to get the deal so it really doesn't matter.

My mentally handicapped janitor has a smart phone.

+1

My own 50 year old mother bought a Side Kick back when that was all there was.

I find it tough to believe that a person is smart enough to post on CL, but not smart enough to use said phone to snap pictures nor receive texts? Phone companies practically make it impossible to have a cell phone without text. ::)

So we are saying that mentally challenged people, and 50 year old mothers are stupid, considering they have smart phones?   Is that the segway being used here?  What does this have to do with Craigslist loonies?   BTW most of us are knocking on 50.....
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

Totally. No one is even hinting that pbj's janitor and savannahlion's mom have easy access to a digital camera to snap a picture of something they would be trying to sell on craigslist.  ::)

I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.
