Portable N64

I don't know if I'm going to back this but thought I'd pass it on for those interested. Seems like a cool idea.

interesting idea, but seems a bit worrisome that he isn't showing what a completed project looks like, just all the components.

So once again, we find that evil of the past seeps into the present like salad dressing through cheap wax paper, mixing memory and desire.

You have to gut your own N64? Keep walking.

You have to gut your own N64? Keep walking.

Not if you pledge an additional $50.

This just reeks of a guy trying to get a free portable N64.

I imagine you could find one to gut for less than $50. And I'm also skeptical that he hasn't shown a completed project.

Maybe I'm saying this because I'm not all that nostalgic for the it but is the N64 the kind of console you need to be able to take on the go? For the most part, a 3DS and virtual console has you covered.  (Well okay, not for Goldeneye, among others, but that's only fun in multiplayer anyhow.)

not even worth the work or hassle if it were free to me with the handfull of games it had that were even worth playing.

still going to need a expensive large and heavy battery for it to even run 10+ minutes.

would rather them try to make a portable xp handheld and bring back it's support over that attempt  :dunno

I like this... http://www.benheck.com/n64-portable/

But I prefer his atari 2600 handheld!

And don't forget you could also get yourself one of these bad boys!!  http://www.funstock.co.uk/rdp-portable-handheld-console-v2-core-edition-black-retro-bit

I can't imagine golden eye being that great to control on a handheld unit, very much like call of duty on the psp, where you only have 1 analog.

I'm not quite sure what it is about Ben Heck but he drives me nuts. His early stuff is great but his later stuff is.... meh.

At first I thought it was his eager willingness to destroy old consoles to turn them into "handhelds" but now I think it's because his website gradually turned into collection of gloating, self-glorifying, hacks. I'm not actually sureif that's it really. There's just something about him and his more recent projects that are just downright annoying.

He strikes me as someone who is a cross between Steve Gibson (full of ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---) and Gabe Newell (An almost religious deity with his fans)

The promotion of element 14 is overdone.  Or the few episodes I saw were.

Eric you are correct, they promote their website way to hard. As for his show it is ok :dunno. After all it is just a guy hacking things in front of a camera, which is what most of do anyway.

Looks like 'protect their own' struck this thread as well.   :lol

Everything he does looks the same and most of it is obsolete now that we all have powerful handheld devices capable of emulation.  His price quotes are so outrageous I doubt he's actually sold much of anything.  I won't deny he gave everyone some good ideas and definitely pushed console hacking up several notches.  Just haven't seen anything else he's done worth being excited over in years.

Well, admittedly, I had never seen that.  Unarguably cool but I can't afford one and I'll never see one in person.

I think on one of his podcasts, he mentions taking his Bill Paxton Pinball to local conventions.  Wisconsin I think.

Yeah, it's "more affordable" than Sterns or JJPs.  But still $6k plus shipping.  I'd love to see one myself.  There is a big pin convention coming up in MA next summer and I'm hoping there will be one there.  Then I'll be able to stand 20ft away from it while the same 4 people hog it all day.

Yeah totally.  I used to work for farnell (owner of element 14 ) and they absolutely adore him, he was in every newsletter.

I saw this posted on another forum. Two reasons it's lame

1) It's about $50 of parts and some instructions

B) The instructions are lifted directly from someone else, not involved in this project

III) A pencil case?!!111!!!!!

He only has less than $600 with 6 days to go. There are only 30 backers, though.

That pencil case is crap, though.  :laugh2:

Admittedly, for a pencil case, it is not bad looking. No idea how sturdy it is.

Like I said, it's some dick living in his mom's basement with no money trying to get a free "portable" N64 by scamming everyone.
