Super Mario Bros 3 SMB3 build
« on: November 12, 2015, 10:12:09 pm »
After a year of planning, photoshopping and building, it is finished

Using a CRT , Original NES console, mini sound amp, waterjet  cut cabinet and a bit of stress here it finally is...

The CRT, console, sound amp and marquee light all power up together, no tv remote necessary to get to game mode, it boots automatically

It looks, plays, and sounds amazing, it's up for sale if anyone is interested... It will fund the next project

Games: Super Punch Out, Fix It Felix Jr, DK, DKjr, DK3, PC10, UMK3, TRON, MS-Pac, Pac, Centipede (2x), Robotron, Galaga, Space Invaders, Street Fighter 2 CE, X-Men vs SF, BuckHunter HD, 2X Custom Vewlix, Custom Nintendo VS 3/4, Atomiswave

Pretty cool. I don't love the gray or the Nintendo logo on the side, but it's definitely neato.

Yea, that's pretty rad.

But those sides gotta be yellow.

I like the grey.  Don't like the little red and  black buttons, but the positives are overwhelmingly good.

This is one of those really nice builds that I wish the thread started at the same time as the build. I would have loved to see that sweet waterjet action. Then again, it doesn't look like you needed much feedback. :applaud:

Is it an un-moded NES, or did you cut the lock out chip, replace the card slot, and did you put in an ever drive in there?

But those sides gotta be yellow.

I've been waiting for the perfect time to quote myself, and here it is:

Actually the grey sides could represent the grey NES cartridge. Not sure if that is what you were going for but after I looked at it long enough, that is what I thought.

I stand corrected, it certainly works for me. It's tying my brain in a knot right now to see SMB3 Nintendo Cab but cool nonetheless.

Love it!

But if you were trying to mimic the cart, I would have gone a darker grey and added the lines and arrow on the sides.

Still, beautiful!

Thank you for all the good words!

I debated on yellow and white for the cab for almost a year, then My uncle suggested gray... Well, I have a dual vs machine, and I color matched the gray to it, so it actually is an official Nintendo color.

The Nintendo cab build has been done a hundred times and documented well, so I didn't feel it was necessary to document the build, I will post interior pics soon though :)

The NES is unmodded, no I don't have the Everdrive in it. I want an Everdrive , I'll get one eventually

I had 6 cabinets cut at the waterjet at the same time, I couldn't be there to video the process.
Games: Super Punch Out, Fix It Felix Jr, DK, DKjr, DK3, PC10, UMK3, TRON, MS-Pac, Pac, Centipede (2x), Robotron, Galaga, Space Invaders, Street Fighter 2 CE, X-Men vs SF, BuckHunter HD, 2X Custom Vewlix, Custom Nintendo VS 3/4, Atomiswave

Looks good.  Although I myself would have gone with the classic Nintendo coin door instead.

But sharp looking nonetheless!

Damn, I was just waiting on someone to say that, I screwed up and should have used one. It's the only thing I regret, I could put one in if the hole just has to be cut, but if the coin door needs an entire new panel, then it won't work out

Let's see... 6 cabinets cut... The wood cost $750 I think, and $1200 to have the waterjet done. I had everything done over a year ago, so it's been a little too long to remember precisely what it all cost.

I definitely know what you mean on the coin door ... I have a super punch out and a Mario bros Widebody. I guess it really doesn't matter, it's not an official N product anyway

Thanks bud, I had a few notable nintendo design historians help me direct the graphics design, there's always going to be opinions. Which is one of the reasons I did the project without posting all of the process, it really is a special game

I think I'll start on smb2 soon, I don't think I'll make the cab, but I'll create the graphics for it. I really like making side art

I think it looks great and I like the color. If you are building and keeping those other 2 cabs then I think the grey adds nice to the variety. As for the coin door, i think it looks fine. I mean, those Nintendo coin doors are really hard to find, and are very expensive when you do find them. You could be standing around for months waiting on one that isn't a crazy price, let alone 3 if you wanted to put them in all of your cabs.

Man, I seriously love this.  SMB 3 is one of my all time faves.  Resisting the urge to buy this!

BTW I love the last little twist tie in the zip tie chain.  That's hilarious!  You could always change that out and do the "ChanceKJ velcro" method.
