Area 51 ROM Slow
« on: September 09, 2014, 10:18:40 am »
Hey All,

I currently have two Hyperspin setups. I have one in an actual arcade machine that's running an i5 3470 processor with a Geforce GT 610 2gb graphics card. Then I have an HTPC set up in my living room that's running an AMD A10 7850k with integrated graphics card. My i5 setup runs Area 51 with no issues but my AMD setup runs Area 51 at like 1 frame per second...it's SUPER slow motion and not playable. I started out by just copying the ROM and CHD from my i5 setup over to my AMD thinking it could be a ROM issue but no luck. The only other difference besides specs is that the i5 setup has MAME 154 and the AMD has MAME 151. They are only a few months apart and seems like the slight difference there shouldn't matter.

So I'm wondering:
- Is my AMD setup not as good as the i5 setup. (I had these systems built for me...I know my way around a computer somewhat but I'm no expert by any means)
- Would dropping in the same graphics card from my i5 setup help my AMD setup play Area 51?
- Could it simply be an emulator setting somewhere?

I'd love to hear some thoughts. I bought the really nice AimTrak light guns so I could play Area 51 on my big screen in my living room but so far I can't since it's barely running.

It's a known bug in several versions of MAME, including the one you're using.

according to that it broke around 0.149 and was fixed in 0.153

Haze...you are the man!

I've never messed with upgrading MAME. I guess I just need to find a download for 154 and install it but will that new version overwrite my controls file or anything else? Just don't want anything getting messed up in the transition.

just copy your existing folder first (all MAME files are stored in the MAME folders unless you specifically tell it otherwise)

some video options did change recently, so you might have to create a new .ini

Some romsets might have changed.

Easiest thing to do is keep both builds handy in their own folders, 0.154 is quite old now (and did have some bugs with Carnevil which might not be to your liking if you're playing gun games) but 0.155 isn't ready.

Haze...just wanted to say that your solution did work (was there any doubt, haha).

I appreciate the help! It was a lot of fun playing through Area 51 with light guns a couple of nights ago! Now I'm running into an issue with Time Crisis though. Just posted a new thread about that in case you have any ideas. http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,141428.0.html

Yup.  That happened to me as well and when I upgraded the problem went away.  Definitely related to .151 with Atari CHD games.
