Heh... yeah I think Activision and EA are secretly the same company.  Remember when Activision used to make good games?

Not really. That was a stupidly long time ago. That's like remembering a time Diablo was never rife with cheaters. Last Activision game that I can recall buying was Vigilante 8 or maybe one of the Star Wars games, hopefully not that craptastic racer thing. Christ was that game awful. Was Crash Bandicoot one of their titles? I dunno, I'm too lazy to look it up. My kids seem to like Crash.

Boy you give em a lot more credit than I do.  I meant 2600 era... when they were actually still activision.

Crash Bandicoot (the original three PS1 games and Team Racing) was Naughty Dog.  I think it changed hands between various developers since ND abandoned it, but not Activision.

Activision and EA were both GREAT companies during the 80's - especially home computer software.  EA used to package their games in gatefold album covers and sometimes hid their little cube/sphere/cone icons on the cover art.  And Activision had tons of great 2600/Commodore 64 titles: Keystone Kapers, Kaboom, Plaque Attack, Megamania, Ghostbusters, River Raid, Masters of the Lamp, Pitfall! - very few of their games weren't classics.

Activision certainly was... they were the first third party developer after all.  As for EA.... I can't really think of anything good they ever released... except for Mirror's Edge, but even a blind squirrel will eventually find a nut.

I was looking at their list on the website and even their old stuff was pretty terrible.  I liked skate or die, but I'm not exactly sure if I liked it because it was good or because it was so bad it was good.

Road Rash, the PGA Tour golf games,  and the NHL games were reason enough to love them back in the day. Oh and Mutant League Football/Hockey were both the shumz.

Let's go back even further for EA: Murder on the Zinderneuf, Racing Destruction Set, Pinball Construction Set, Wizard, Archon, One-on-One, Skate or Die!   They had some great C64 (and other 8-bit computer) games and they were maybe only topped by the late Epyx.

Those were the last Activision titles I can remember buying. Didn't say they were any good.  :P I bought V8 because I was desperate for a Carmageddon replacement. Carma was like a dirty whore you kept going back to, I76 and V8 is like a prissy "I'm-still-a-virgin" PTA mom and her ditzy blond moron of a daughter with a pink dress. I still cringe every time I see those Activision titles in my collection.

Oh yeah, I remember a couple of titles from way back then.  Used to spend hours on Kaboom!

Road Rash still holds up!  Sadly, I like the old hockey games better than the new ones.  Part of me wants EA to release a new modern Mutant League Football, but then the rest of me thinks they'll just ---fudgesicle--- it up.

Not saying they held up - just showing how Activision and EA were great companies back in the day.

Well see that's where I disagree.  If they don't hold up then the games, even at the time, were mediocre at best.  Like I can pop in Super Mario Bros. right now and have a blast... because it's a good game and Nintendo is a good company.  On the other hand a game of eh let's just say Twisted Metal I... yeah it's not so great.

Mutant League isn't that bad actually, I forgot about those... then again it might be like skate or die..... I just remember them as being good.  Haven't tried them in some time.

Heh. Gamers in the 80's didn't have access to a a time machine, Howard. We had fun with them and, for their time, they were the best of their genres - and many of them are still charming and fun. There are a lot of "great" games that didn't hold up for whatever reason - and that includes a lot of the Playstation library.

ADDENDUM: If you are playing a modern game that you are genuinely enjoying - do you stop and ask yourself, "will this game be fun 30 years from now?"  And if the answer is "no" do you suddenly stop enjoying it?

I hate sports games in general with a few exceptions.  I played enough Mutant League Football/Hockey to choke an elephant, LOVED those games, even joined in on the KickStarter for the new version.  NFL Blitz and NBA Jam were great as well.  I like the super over-the-top versions of sports games.

No see I actually have good taste in games.  If I look at my childhood collection, they are the timeless classics for each system.  I don't enjoy sub-par games.  At least in general.  And again, I disagree.  If it didn't hold up then it wasn't all that great.  Btw your playstation example is a good one.  The PSX was a horrid system with crappy games, very few exceptions (and those exceptions are typically arcade ports which are irrelevant in this day and age).  It wasn't that they didn't hold up... they were never any good.  That's why I got a n64 growing up.  I still pop in Mario Kart once in a while.  ;)

I can't believe you just typed "they were the best in their genres" when referring to EA and Activision without a "j/k" or something at the end.  Like I said, activision in the 2600 era was good, but that was the only period in which they were.  EA has never been good, and I'm not trying to start something, that's just a fact.  If you are looking for the best in their genres in the 8 and 16 bit eras you look to companies like Sega and Nintendo, Konami and Capcom.

I remember thinking back in the day that EA's logo sucked.

I also remember thinking Epyx had a pretty rad logo  :lol

But Activision was always pretty badass. They made even rainbows cool. Playing Robot Tank or H.E.R.O. on the 2600 and seeing that logo on the bottom was just too damn cool.

EA has never been good, and I'm not trying to start something, that's just a fact.  If you are looking for the best in their genres in the 8 and 16 bit eras you look to companies like Sega and Nintendo, Konami and Capcom.

See - the problem here is that you're comparing games made in the early to mid 80's to games you played in the late 80's to mid 90's.   I will say it again - gamers didn't have time machines.   Do you think they sat there and just "dealt with" mediocre games for 10 years? Do you play your games and sigh because they may be better a decade from now?

Also, I hate to break it to you but the N64 games held up just as bad.  It was just a time when everything HAD TO BE in 3-D but graphically, we were still short and when you look and play them, it's a bit jarring compared to what we have now. Doesn't mean that they're not still fun sometimes - Blast Corps, Crash Bandicoot, Metal Gear Solid, Ocarina of Time - still solid games. But ugly. Yet, at the time, they were some of the best.

You're arguing apples to oranges here.

Vigo: I kind of liked EA's logo back then.  When you were loading their games, that logo would change colors one line at a time from middle to bottom to top and then all at once when it was almost done.  It was pretty amusing.

I remember that, that was pretty cool. I have ingrained in my mind they they loved to plaster their logo against a grey all the time. Made the logo feel dull to me. I also remember spending waaay to long trying to figure out if those are simply a square, circle and triangle, or if those were suppose to be letters, Like ECA.

I thought it was a C (EleCtronicArts), some throught it was an O (ElectrOnicArts).  The official answer from them according to their "Farther" newsletter:  it's just a sphere.

Ugh...way too much thinking involved for a logo. "Horizontal blinds" must have been pretty cool in the early 80's

NBA 2K14 was no better, in the 4th quarter all the fans were still in the stands at Heat home games.

I picked up last year's PS4 Madden for $10 this week.  Not that I actually pay for video games anymore, but it was $10 virtual bucks.  Figure it'll be good for the houseguests as I can't imagine even opening the packaging.  Well, I guess I should so I can download an updated roster....

New for Madden 16, the ---fudgesicle--- this ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- simulator. Now you can feel the air get sucked right out of the stadium as your worthless team fails to win yet another home game. See your fans leave at halftime, and the opposing team's fans stick around, only to watch your ass get handed to you in yet another expected loss. Listen as John Madden's goldfish attention span focuses on your Punter's favorite flavor of Dorito, and draws useless doodles on the screen, rather than covering your game that nobody wanted to see. If your game runs long, watch as your game get cut short with 8 minutes left in the 4th quarter, in order to bring you the beginning of Jaguars/Browns game. Ea Sports. If it's in the game. It's in the game.
