Afterburner, Afterburner II, switcher?

So my client just picked up an almost-working Afterburner Deluxe. For those not in the know, its the full motion cabinet. Pics to follow.

From my limited research, I found that the Afterburner I did not come with a throttle. Only the Afterburner II had the throttle. I was not able to boot the machine, but he swears its an Afterburner I. But it has a throttle!

So, my questions are:

1: Did Afterburner I come with a throttle and it was just never hooked up?
2: If I can find an afterburner 2 boardset, can I device a switcher to switch between the 2?
3: If I can't find an afterburner 2 boardset, can I substitute an Afterburner 1 boardset with Afterburner 2 ROMs?
4: Does anyone have any secret websites they go to for info on these machines? I'm hoping to find a list of "This is the part that breaks all the time, and this is how to fix/replace it" type of information.
