Build Your Own Airplane
« on: December 10, 2003, 10:27:23 pm »
I'm no longer the king of BYO projects among my friends.  A buddy of mine got a kit and is assembling his own airplane.  Has anyone here ever done this?

Here's my buddy's web site if you want to follow his progress:

Not personally, but I work with a guy who is. I considered it, but I know I won't complete it so I'm not about to start.  (A matter of knowing me) I understand 6 years is a fast time to complete one, assuming you don't slack off building it, and have normal commitments.  Considering the station of avation, some have estimated that most of the airplanes finished this year will be home builts.

The famious Oskosh air show is all about planes people build themselves.

In short, it is done all the time, and if your planes are good, and you do it right, it is just as safe as any other airplane.   I wouldn't hesitate to fly in any such plane that passed all the certification, but I wouldn't want to be near the first test runs.

Mame cabinets are more interesting to me - at least now.  I also consider it reasonable to belive I could finish a cabinet before I got bored and moved on.

I guess I'd have to treat a project like that differently then my cabinet.

"Where is that other bolt?  Hmm, 3 bolts should hold that down just fine for home use."

I'm with you guys.  I don't see myself ever going up in that plane, but he *is* a stickler for detail.  So I'm sure it will be a quality plane when he's finished.  I'm just a chicken when it comes to flying.  I only do it when I have to.

My friend flies model aircraft all the time.  He's just an aircraft nut, basically.

I prefer hobbies that keep me on the ground.

With my arcade cab I might still fry myself someday, but I won't crash and burn.   ;D

that's awesome - more power to the guy for pulling it off.  I remember checking out some cool kits for 3/4 scale old-school fighter planes, like the fokker tri-plane.

That'd be cool :)

I took flying lessons when I was 16.  I even soloed.  Got to 1500 feet, made my base leg to turn around and land after taking off, realized I'm a 16 year old nerd 1500 feet in the air, by myself.  Got scared s*itless.  Nailed the landing perfectly.  Got out, and never went back.

There is no need to fly yourself.  There are other people that do a real good safe job.

Even if I could afford my own plane, I'd fly commercial.   Except maybe for that airline where the strippers fly with you.  Wasn't that in Maxim?  NOW THATS Flying.    ;D
