What front end, if any, does this?
« on: December 10, 2003, 06:09:08 am »
I play my mame games with the auto rotate option on, so the vertical games come up vertical on the monitor and the horizontal games come up horizontal. Of course I must rotate and degaus my monitor each time I change the orientation. What I really hate though is when I play a vertical game e.g. Galaga and decide to change to another game the menu is still horizontally orientated, which means either rotating my monitor (or usually my head) to navigate through the menu to pick another game which may be a vertical game and have to rotate it back.

Is there a front end out there that automatically senses the orientation of the last rom selected and is able to change the orientation of the menu to suit the way the monitor is currently positioned? ???

I haven't heard of such a front end but like most things to do with mame that I think of, I usually find someone else has thought of it first.

If there isn't a front end out there that does this already, is there any chance of anyone adding an option to there front end to do this?

I'm thinking Mamewah, Dragon King, Emulaxian etc.

I thought this was now an option in mame.

Search around for autorotate in the mame docs.  But I think its been in there for a few versions.

I was going to add this to JFront (actually so I could pick a resolution based on properties) but it would have worked for that also... but I removed the feature since I wasn't using it (Hardware Stretching looked as good on my monitor as running 320x240 native for games)..

What you're describing has been done by a user of EmuTron before. EmuTron is no longer supported, however, that feature will be in Kymaera, A new FE to be released soon.

In emulaxian set the skinsautorot property in section 4 of the general cfg menu to true.

Thanks for the replies, I knew someone would have this feature already. I guess I'll be downloading Emulaxian, get ready for some ridiculously stupid noob questions peter. ;D

Your just trying to avoid my noob questions. ;)

I have had a look at the emutron front end but I prefer the look of 3D-Arcade. Perhaps I might try Kymaera when it is released.

I like this skin:

Will this auto rotate, or do only specific skins do this?

If only specific skins will, which ones?

 ;)

the auto rotate is actually more like a skin selector...it chooses to either use the first or the second skin from the current skinset depending if the last launched game was a vertical or a horizontal game. So that skin could be your horizontal skin but you'll need a vertical skin too. I have a vertical price wheel skin if that is what you want...but first try the fe itself...see if you like the way it works or not...it's not for everyone  :D
