Bootleg Galaga Pickup? Wiring Mess...What did I do???
« on: August 06, 2014, 05:51:03 am »
New pickup....PCB Wiring Nightmare.  Thoughts????

I have no picture at all, the last guy replaced the monitor supposedly. I think he just swapped out the tube.

No picture but monitor powers on. I am convinced it has to be the wiring nightmare below.

Looks like someone just put on a new PCB to the old Galaxian connector to use as a swap over for the new Galaga connector. Not the cleanest way to do it for sure, but if you wanted to swap back, you could just unplug it.

They left the old transformer there, but I can't tell if it is still wired in or not. weird.

Not too sure what is going on with that circuit board, is it missing a chip there? And how many wires are joined together there? That can't be good at all, unless its all the grounds or something.

Hmmn, you are getting power to the second Isolation transformer that is powering the monitor at least. So, check the wire pinouts on the board, make sure that your switching power supply is getting power, and then sending it out again to the PCB. That is where I would advise to start looking. Then look into the ton of wires joined together, make sure that isn't the problem.

Also, what number is your cabinet? It should say it on the back, at the top it is carved into the wood.

That is a wire mess you've got there.  I would consider pulling it out completely and replacing with a new Jamma harness.  You can then get a Galaga or Galaxian adapter for the board.  At least this will give you a clean start.
My current collection:  Arkanoid^3, Asteroids Deluxe, Centipede, Donkey Kong w/DIIK, Frenzy w/Berzerk multi, Galaga, Galaxian, Gyruss, Mappy,  Missile Command, Multi-Williams, O'Boyles Arcade (Mame), Pac-man,  Sinistar, Star Wars, Tempest, War Gods

Jamma harness...is that what is in there now? I was looking to replace some things but some say Jamma and others non-Jamma....?

Is this what I need to buy? http://www.jammaboards.com/store/jamma-full-cabinet-wiring-harness-loom-jamma-h1.html

That link is a jamma harness. However, I can't tell what is it there now.

thanks for the replies everyone!

ok...hmmm.....I think I might desoder the mess, clip the bundle and try to resoder it the correct way. I will see what happens. If I have to buy the Jamma Harness with the galaga bootleg adapter I might as well get a galaga or galaxian official board and get it all looking official.

I sense $$$ coming out my wallet on this one BUT I did only pay 200 for the cabinet. We shall see what the future brings

If you go the Jamma route, listen to this advice. GET A 60 in 1 BOARD. You would have to swap out the control panel to play all the games, but a 60 in 1 brand new is about a quarter of the cost of a new Galaga board, plus you would have 59 other great games to play on it.

Isn't a 60-1 illegal though?

From what I read, I don't think so. And considering most arcade stores sell them and you can get them off of ebay and amazon, with prime shipping no less, I think that they are quite legal enough.

Ok that might be a good option. It just erks me that bootleg boards are even in existence. If I had the original board I could most likely get it repaired or fix the wiring and continue on with my day. I got the cabinet at my friends house now due to lack of room, so he is basically trying to go over the schematics for the bootleg "gallg" or whatever they call the bootleg version of Galaga and testing it out.  I guess he did get some kind of picture (ones and zeros across screen) by replacing some fuses but then clipped all the wiring and now he is at point zero again.  :banghead: But nevertheless "we" are trying to get it running. The wiring does in fact need a huge overhaul and now I am considering pulling everything out of the cab, sanding, painting, and completely refurbishing it. I don't want to necessarily "give in" and just through a 60-1 in there. Although it would most likely be the most cost effective option. In terms of resale value I would think an original would go for a few more bucks than a multicade...no? I just want to weigh all my options.

I do appreciate all the responses from everybody in the forum. I would be more lost than ever if I didn't have any help. So thanks again. Also I will keep the forum posted on any progress or future hurdles.

Game On....

UPDATE

Ok so apparently I found out (and correct me if I'm wrong) the startup screen for Galaga is "1's and 0's" that come on the screen...no? Thats what my screen is stuck on. The question for the forum is "what do I do next?" Do the chips need to be cleaned? What is preventing the board from the proper boot sequence? I will be researching this and hopefully someone out there has an answer.

Thanks.... p.s. see picture below

and if u have a meter ? make sure your +5 is right 4.8-5.2vdc
the header dose not cause that..the board is booting
some time's u can c the # of the loaction u need to look at
ie: row 4,chip 6 etc...it may or may not show it?
if not chk the video rom's for proper clean and seating
