Question about VMMaker and 25 khz modes
« on: July 26, 2014, 02:59:19 pm »
Hello,  I am trying to get my 25 khz monitor working with CRT_Emudriver.  I have my monitor type set to "EGA" in vmmaker.ini, but after I run it, then go into arcade_osd, it is only showing 15 khz modes.  Am I missing something?   I've also tried to edit my monitor_specs to some custome ones IO found online, still no dice.  Any thoughts?

I'm running an HD2400 and changed min dot clock to 8.0.

Any help much appreciated!

Hi moogrum.

Are you using XP or W7? If using W7, make sure to run VMMaker with admin rights. Attach your vmmaker.ini and modelines.txt here so I can check.
Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

Hi Calamity!  I am using Windows 7, running vmmaker as administrator, and now, arcade_osd shows no frequencies at all!  I think I'm pretty close, just need a few settings tweaked or something, and groovymame keeps telling me switchres can't find the correct mode.  I added a video of the display as well.

Thanks, cools, that helped.   Now I'm battling 2 last (hopefully) issues:

First: I think my card is not putting out the proper sync, because it is pretty much impossible to get the screen to stop scrolling, and when I do, even less chance it is centered vertically.  At that point, even bumping the cabinet can set it off again.

Second: When I launch some games they are still saying switchres could not find a resolution, then look just fine, besides the sync issue (Bubble Bobble) others do not show this error, but come out squished (golden tee).

Oh, also, I'm an idiot, it was a k7400 15 khz monitor, so, yeah. my bad.  I changed all the settings and jpac jumper to 15khz.

Again, any advice welcome!

Hi moogrum,

You're using 'magic' resolutions, these don't work under W7. So use ModeTableMethod_XML = 1 instead of '2' as you have now.

Also, make sure to run GroovyMAME with admin rights.

For the sync problems I don't have an answer... the first thing I though was your monitor needed composite sync, but the JPAC already cares about this. So maybe the v-freq (or v-hold) potentiometer is not properly adjusted or needs cleaning?

Thanks guys!  It seems to be working pretty well, except for the vertical scrolling.  I'll pick a game, set the vhold pot to the right spot, so it stays still, then when I switch games, even though the resolution and picture look good, it'll start scrolling, and different games scroll different directions!  It's like the card isn't telling my monitor "this is the top, this is the bottom" .  I tried doing some custom monitor_specs but vmmaker gets hung up making a dynamic table.  Anything else I should experiment with?

Ordered a cheap HD4650 on ebay, going to see if maybe that will make any difference.

OK, so I got a nice steady picture today, and it was because I didn't have my jpac plugged in with a USB.  Apparently, the sync signal power comes from the USB, so it was not getting any sync, as I suspected.  I am using an ipac4, so I figured all keyboard signals would go through that, eliminating the need for a USB connection on the jpac, but that is not the case!  Anyway, I am super happy that I figured it out, and I hope that maybe my ignorance will prevent somebody else from having the same frustration I had.  That's not to say I won't have any problems now that I'm doing front-end config!  What are projects for, though?  Cheers!

Yes been there done that...
Mine gets the power from the PS2 port.. and so when that isn't plugged in.. the picture scrolls :)
