UPS bashed monitor.

Hey I just got a 27" XGA  capable monitor for a friend from UPS today. The thing got a good bit smashed. It still shows a picture, but it doesn't look as sharp as it could be and the contrast seems really poor. It also has a problem where about a third of the screen looks really faded radiating from the center out. Color is really off in this area too. Do you think a TV repair place could fix the issues? It is an Electrograph and would be really nice because it supports up to 1024x768 has a vga input two composite and one svideo as well as decent speakers etc..

The dude didn't pack it too well it seems. I bet UPS will not give him any money for his insurance. Hopefully I don't get hosed on this one. I was just trying to help a friend get into this retro arcade stuff.

You may have to manually degauss the picture tube with a handheld degaussing coil. You can buy these from Bob Roberts or Happ Controls.

Also, if it is inside a case, try taking the back of the case off to get at all the secret hidden adjustment knobs inside. I often have to do that with OLD pc monitors.

I don't think that it is a gauss issue totally. Maybe some of the internal controls can help though. This monitor has a very effective degauss system from what I see already, but it doesn't affect the problem area at all.

It looks like UPS is going to come and take it away so I will not get a chance to mess with it.

Typicaly shipping destruction: The shadow mask at the front of the tube was damaged, causing the beams to hit the wrong phosphors.  It was shaken so hard it bent/warped or separated causing the problems.

Nothing will fix it, it's trash, at least the CRT itself.
