Original Games' Steering Wheel Degrees of Rotation
« on: July 12, 2014, 11:32:19 pm »
Hello all,

If this was covered before or considered a goofy question, I apologize; I was wondering if some members would know some of the original arcade game steering wheel maximum rotation values. My Sega Daytona USA 2 Battle on the Edge twin has 270° but I was wondering what they are for other games like Outrun 2, Crazy Taxi 1 and 3, Hydro Thunder, Daytona USA, Sega Rally, Indy 500, Virtua Racing, Ridge Racer, etc. I'm setting up my G25 for specific settings for racing games using the Logitech profiler so it'd be great to know what some of these games used. Originally, I've been using the 270° for all the games but playing Outrun 2006 C2C and Hydro Thunder was more difficult to control so I've changed it to 200° for those two titles.

Off the sub, has anyone tried Hydro Thunder Hurricane with a PC wheel?

Thanks in advance!

Generic Eric

The driving forum has several stickies that would give you quite a bit of light reading!

The degrees of rotation in that spreadsheet aren't actually how far the wheel turns.

Wheels that have mechanical stops are commonly referred to as 270 degree wheels.
There are only a few manufactures of these wheels though.  Most of them are Happ or Sega.
The Happ wheel is in fact 270 degrees.  Not sure about the Sega, but it can't be too far off.  (I have one, will have to measure sometime).
A few of the older sprite scaling games had less rotation.

Optical wheels that spin endlessly are often referred to as 360 degree wheels even though they can spin unto infinity.
These games often have no center point for the steering wheel since the optical encoder can only tell which direction and how fast the wheel is moving, not exactly where it is.

Nearly all the games you mentioned are in fact 270 degrees.  The reason Outrun 2006 C2C and Hydro Thunder play better with a narrower range is because they were made with gamepad joysticks in mind.  Those can change direction a lot faster than a big steering wheel.  For most console emulators and a few PC games that were designed more for analog thumbsticks on gamepads, I end up setting the rotation to only 150 degrees.

2k6 does have a sensitivity setting...... adjusting it can help.

Thanks for the replies, all. Yes, it seems that the games I listed are 270 degrees, at least from watching YouTube vids. I guess I should've specified pot-based wheels too. Howard, I tried changing the sensitivity in the settings of Outrun to no avail. It's playable but not as responsive as changing the wheel to 200 degrees. It's too bad we can't combine optical with pot based. I have an Optipac which is great with my Badlands 360 wheels but I need a separate cab to play Championship Sprint and such. At least one game I could think of allows you to choose from pot, joystick or optical in the service menu. I think it was the 1000 Mile Rally series.
