Cocktail cabinet inspired by fellow BYOAC'r
« on: July 10, 2014, 11:37:21 am »
So I was at a car wash one day with my kids. While waiting in the lobby my boys (11 and 6) noticed a dusty arcade game in the corner of the room. They asked if they could play it and I said sure and gave them a couple bucks. Literally 90 seconds later they came back to ask for more. It seems Xbox and PS4 has made understanding the simpleness of 8o's video games difficult. I went over to perhaps stretch the money a little further. The machine turned out to be a 60 in 1 cocktail machine. I sat down and scored 79000+ on Donkey Kong. I haven't played this game in nearly 30 years and I think that was the best score I ever got. My boys we fascinated. I decided to research these things to maybe buy one. Craigslist has them for $800-$1000 locally and I could get one shipped for maybe a couple hundred less. It seemed a little much. Then I found this forum. Build my own! Yes. So many great ideas and craftsman. I took the plunge.

I found a bunch of design ideas I liked but one stood out. I decided to make mine like jkdubb's cocktail cabinet

I changed his design slightly to accommodate a place for legs and feet . More like a standard cabinet.

A 3d rendering of the concept

I'm a machinist so I have access to an entire machine shop worth of equipment. I decided to use MDF so I wouldn't be able to make the cabinet in the shop. Too messy. But I made some items that made the garage buil a little easier.

I made templates to cut curves with my router.

Roughed out

Finished

The templates helped me cut out the various parts.

Went with a 24" widescreen display. Test fitting it here.

Got some hinges for the "lid". They allow the top to stand upright without any support.

Paint and molding. I'm a SF Giants fan so I wanted to go with a orange and black color theme. It turned out pretty good. The Pacman orange t-molding might be a little off. My wife said it looks like the old 60's Batmobile. She's not far off.

Mounting the display. This one was a little tricky. The monitor I had was an old Asus. I kicked around the idea of buying a 4:3 display suited for this project but I wanted to keep this as cheap as possible. My Asus had a curved back that made mounting it difficult. I thought about decasing it but I have a tendency to break things that don't come aprt easily. So I decided to over build / over engineer it. I bought some swivel feet from McMaster Carr and made some brackets to hold the display in place.

Worked like a charm.

I debated over glass vs acrylic vs polycarbonate for the top and ended up going with acrylic. It was the cheapest option. I am not one hundred percent happy with it as it seems very static-y. I live with it for a while.

Notice the 4 four holes.

I wanted to make some kind of hold down that looked like a quarter or token or something. I decided Pacman would be cool.

Some 1/4-20's to hold it down

Sorry bad pic

PM up close

Run, sucka!

Very sleek!!!!!!!

Loving these cocktail projects. Those Monitor clips and the custom glass holders look AWESOME!
How hard were they to make and most importantly would you consider making them for a little $$?    ;D

Those parts are fairly easy to make if you have access to a state of the art cnc machine shop. As far as making those for $$... I don't think my boss would appreciate that much. I really need to get my own machine  :(

Those glass holders are unique and very cool....great job on the build overall...very nice.

Looks cool, I assume from the pics the bottom of the joysticks and buttons are exposed underneath?

I made a, for lack of a better term, drawer that conceals the wiring underneath. It slides in and out for easy access.

 Well done! This looks great. It's awesome that my project inspired you. I love your solution for holding the acrylic down. I am super jealous of your equipment setup. If I had access to a CNC machine I'd probably never stop making these things. :)

Thanks for making my day.

I love the Pac man mounts holder things.

I have a 60w CNC laser at work. Am truing to think of how to work etch mettle in a project.
