Anyone actually going to watch the new Battlestar Galactica?
« on: December 08, 2003, 05:51:00 pm »
The Sci-Fi channel blew it big time.

Cylons that look like humans? What's scary about that? ::)

Starbuck AND Boomer are now female? (that's like making the Easter Bunny, the Easter Turtle! note: The Holiday Armadillo reference as left out)

Earth is gone, they aren't searching for it? ::)

Only the Vipers look the same.. ::)

Why even call it Battlestar Galactica? Idiots! I hate them.   >:(

Of course I'm going to watch it.  But, it's not going to be on for a few weeks in Canada.

Yep, gonna watch it. I'll reserve judgement till I've seen it to say whether it's good or bad.

Yeah, I didn't mind it at all--of course I wasn't very attached to the original--i found it disjointed and a little cheesy--I always thought it had been edited cause it seemed like parts were missing.  The new one had a good lead up, good action and I didn't mind the replacement of starbuck with a chick, because she acted like starbuck would (but was a chick.)  I also thought it was nice how they showed the old centurion behind glass as well as the cylon basestar--provided some continuity with the old series without compromising it (too much).  I will watch it all I think.

BG was one of my favorite shows when it was first on in the 70s.

I watched the first part of the miniseries. Pretty good. They've got most of the character names from the old series, even the minor characters (Boomer, Jolly, etc.) I don't mind Starbuck being female, she at least acted like the original Starbuck would. As did Apollo, Colonel Tigh, Adama, and the others.

The effects in the new series IMO are a lot more believable than the original series, ie. space ships that act more like space ships than airplanes, less ridiculous laser sounds in space.

The plot points are more believeable too, after all, how can three Cylon base ships wipe out the entire Colonial fleet (in the original). Baltar's role in the new series is more believeable, too.

BTW in the short-lived "Galactica 1980" there -were- human-like Cylons.

I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

...tonight (Tuesday 12/9) they're going to run part one and part two one after the other which I'm recording on tape.

I agree that the least they could do is keep the Cylons as robots...that was TOTALLY the best part. Their voices and red light....that's still cool today!.....oh well, budgets rule in Sci Fi.

BTW, has anyone noticed the MAJOR budget cuts on Enterprise?....so far they've been to the "old west" and "modern/20th century" earth. That's what the original series did when their heads were on the chopping block.

Bring back Generations! (the best Trek in my humble opinion).

new BG first 30 minutes ZZZzzzzZZZZzzzzZZZZzzzz   the destruction of the colonies was cheesy.  I gave up after the lasers shot like hand guns from Logan's Run..  ::)

Guess I'm a traditionalist... I will not watch the second half no matter how many times Sci-Fi plays it over the next 12 months.

I just heard they are releasing a Battle Star Galatica movie in a few weeks.  The director changed a few things around though.  Starbuck is a hobbit, The Cyclons are Orgs, the Galatica is a golden ring and the 13th colony is now a volcano.
Other than that it's just like the original.

Seriously, the show was decent, but it wasn't Battle Star Galatica.  If they're going to make Starbuck a woman they should at least hire a woman that looks like a woman.

I'm just hoping it fails and the Spike channel buys the rights and re-re-creates it.
They can call it "Red Eye for the Straight Guy."

By your command.

I'm reserving judgement on the cylons until you see more than the woman--if thats all they show then I will say that just sucks--the cylons' voices made them ominous and cool--If they lost that part of it, they would be giving up a mojor "feel" of the original.

I'd like to see some more of the centurions as well, and defiantely agree about the voice thing. Old school cylon centurions were cool, but I dunno about the ominous part. I'll grant they're more ominous than a dalek, but not by much. ;)

The original series was a great classic program, but I have NO desire to see this new version because somehow they manage to f*** it up royally. Also the so-called 'actors' they have nowadays are just "pretty boys" who just look good but have no personallity or acting ability.

I was expecting Babylon 5 with Vipers but I liked it. I thought it was a bit cheesy to have the classic 80's music and the original Cylon robots in the museum though. The new centurions look pretty good and the redesigned Viper pilot helmets are not bad.

I'm thinking Baltar doesn't know it but he's a replicant! err... I mean Cylon. Has anyone seen the movie Solaris? The background music when Clooney and his dead wife are talking sounds similar to when Baltar is around his dead girlfriend. Okay, enough nitpicking.

I think I'm gonna keep watching it. Is the 2 hours per episode thing going to continue, is that just for the first two?

I saw Battle Star Galatica: The Low Down preview show, so I knew what to expect. Seems to be a good reinterpretation so far.

IMDB lists the whole thing at 240 minutes, so unless they're planning to do a series there's only the two parts they've already shown. ;)

I have heard they are looking at making a series out of it though. I'd watch it if they did.

I loved the original!

I love the new one to!

I did expect ther to be more than four hours though.  It is rather short for a mini series. it's more like Micro-series or a really long series pilot.

There are only twelve of the human looking Cylons by the way.

As for the Logun's run comment, I'm not sure that any of the weapons were meant to be lasers.  They seemed to go for a lower tech/hard Sci Fi feel. They used a lot of missiles and projectile weapons.

Earth is not gone in the mini-series either.  Adama does believe that earth actually exists, but he uses it to try and give people a sense of hope.

It has been a while since I saw the original so I don't remember for sure, but didn't they start out looking for Kobol to find out what happened to the 13th colony. They don't learn about Earth until they get to Kobol (which looked a lot like Egypt and the temple at karnac ;D) in Lost Planet of the Gods which is the 4th and 5th episode.

I think is's very cool. The story is solid and keeps true to the original story for the most part.

The only thing I do not like is the Human looking Cylon.

Oh man, I am so dissappointed! I was waiting for episode three...and it didn't start. I raced to my computer and checked the net and...and...and that's it! It's over! Two episodes! Mini-series? Micro-series! Long movie! Is it just me or did it seem to end very akwardly...so much unfinished. I really hope they turn this into a series. Maybe that was their plan. Maybe it's all about hooking me. An evil conspiracy to steal my productive years and leave me a wrinkled, broken shell of a man, disillusioned with life and obsessed with what could have been. I've got to go check my locks now...and put on my foil hat.  :(

The human looking cylons do not bother me.  There are only twelve of them after all.

The two thing that bothered me the most were:

The opening scene.    I liked how it introduced the back story and all, but the scene between Six and the officer was just dumb.  Why send any cylons into the station at all?  Just blow it up and move on. Or have the centurions walk in, convert their hands to weapons and shoot the guy.

The other problem was the human/cylon on the Ragnar station. If he was there, why didn't the cylons know about Ragnar?  Why didn't he just blow the sation while the Galactica was docking?  There are better way they could have let Adama know about the human/cylons.

Negative -- there are 12 types, we only saw 5, the blond, the news guy, the arms dealer guy, the black chick on the bridge, and boomer.  The rest of the guys can be sleepers so they can be anyone.  This means the people writing the story can do anything they want when the ratings start to drop.... and they will, Adama, Boxy, or anyone could be a Cylon.

The two thing that bothered me the most were:
Only two?

Why send any Cylons into the station at all?
Because the writers of the show have no imagination.

If he was there, why didn't the Cylons know about Ragnar?  Why didn't he just blow the station while the Galactica was docking?
Why did Adamas use the weapons that were on the ship after he found out that a Cylon was on the ship for god knows how long?
Adamas was so paranoid, he wouldn't use computers the humans made, but he'll use weapons of mas destruction that could have been tampered with.

The writers of the show are just pulling the story out of their butts as they go, stealing ideas and story lines from every Sci-Fi movie.  I'd make a list of everything that bothered me about the movie, but I don't care anymore. Hopefully after they create a series for this, and it dies, it will be forgotten, like the 80s version of BSG where they are going back in time.

A lot of people are jumping to conclusions based on incomplete information.

The only thing we know for sure is that there is cylon that looks like Boomer. We have no Idea how that will progress if they continue the series.

I've seen people who also assume that the Boomer Cylon is the Imperious Leader because Number Six replies "By Your Command"

Overall I liked it. I'll wait and see how the cliffhangers play out.

I will agree that "Galactica 1980" was a travesty.  I even hated it back in 1980!

The thing that I am really psyched about is the Playstation 2 game!
