Stupid question: OK button?
« on: December 07, 2003, 09:53:42 pm »
Hello,
My silly question of the day...I noticed that sometimes when I use MAME, some of the games have a screen at the beginning that says something like "The Sound Isn't 100%" and then it says "Press OK to Continue".
Then I have to type in OK and everyone is happy. I guess my question is: What is the solution for this in a cabinet? Do you have to pull out the Keyboard everytime, or is there a way to wire up an "OK" button? Or is there a software fix that I'm not aware of?
Thanks for any help.

As it says in the MAME FAQ, just wiggle the joystick to the left and right.

Hee hee, at least you didn't add O and K buttons to your control panel, I have seen a few people who did!

Why not just change the following in your mame.ini file?

skip_disclaimer         1
skip_gameinfo           1

That won't do all of it.  That clears the "ROMS are Copyrighted" and "Uses 3 Z80 CPU's" screens, but not the "Screen Flipping in Cocktail mode is not supported, that he's talking about.

Options -

Wiggle joystick -
Use NoNameMame, which has .ini options like above for these screens also,
Compile your own MAME, see http://www.fraggersxtreme.com/arcadepanels/faq.htm#How do I get rid of the blasted "Click Ok to continue?" screens

PaugeOliver,

Most of the CP's with O and K buttons are from the days before the Joystick left/right option was added to MAME.  When I was in the early planning stage, this optoin was not included, and I was planning on having OK buttons.

Luckily they changed things before I got too far.
Real Life.  Still a poor substitute for video games!

Actually many new cabinets have O and K on them because the person didn't know about left and right.

Either way I wouldn;t have made dedicated buttons if I didn't know, I'd make player 1 button 1 and 2 O and K if I didn't know the left and right thing.

IMO, Mame should say "Type OK or wiggle joystick to continue"

Or even just "Wiggle joystick to continue".  I get the feeling that more people wiggle the joystick than type OK, and the ones that do type OK could just as easily press the left/right keys.

But, as this web page proves, nothing is really required to make sense.

I actually contacted one of the dev's a couple of years ago about changing the opening screen from "Press OK to continue" to "Press any key to continue" (which MAME also uses sometimes.

The Response - basically "It's the way it is.  We like it the way it is.  We're not changing it."

Then about 8 versions ago, they added an .ini file option to disable the screens altogether.

Like you said, logic doesn't apply.  Go figure!!

Thanks for the info on compiling your own version of Mame.  It took about 30 minutes to download, edit, and compile but now I'm free of all nag and start-up screens.  No more "OK" or "Press Any Button" for me.

This is how that happened.... after 5 years of people emailing them several times a day with "how do i skip the ok?"  and seeing countless people still under the assumption that you need "o" and "k" buttons they caved and decided to give the people what they want.  Or at least, that's the theory.  :)
