Question about putting I-Explorer onto a floppy
« on: December 07, 2003, 02:43:36 pm »
Hey guys, here goes.. I have my main computer hooked up to a cable modem. I wanted to update my cabinet computer with some more games and the latest version of I.Explorer but when I hook my cab computer to the cable modem I can't seem to get it to connect to the internet. So now I just wan't to download E.Explorer and some MAME roms onto my main computer and put it onto a floppy or burn it onto a disc and then load it onto my cabinet computer. Is there any problems with doing this ? Is there anything special I need to do ? Should I put it on a floppy or burn it to disc ? What about MAME roms, will I be able to just download the zipped roms off of the floppy or disc and just put them into my roms folder without a problem ? I know some of these are probably stupid questions but I'm when it comes to software I'm definately not the sharpest tool in the shed. ::). If anyone has answers to even some of these questions I'd be greatful.

Thanks for reading :)

By I-Explorer I assume you are talking about Internet Explorer.  You can't fit this on a floppy. Its like some ridiculous size like 15 megs or something.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say "E.Explorer"...

The mame roms, yes you can just copy them to floppy or to a cd-r and copy them into your roms folder on your cabinet.

I'd recommend going out and just getting a cheap ethernet hub.  They are super cheap nowadays.  You can probably get one for $10.

On your cab computer: are all protocols loaded?  IE TCP/IP?  Is the driver for your NIC loaded?

Did you use the setup wizard to set up your machine for Internet service?

You can't put IE onto a floppy as has been said.  What you likely downloaded was a download installer.  Pulls needed files from the 'net.  They're particularly annoying, because what happens in a situation like yours?  You can't do diddly.

As for the ROMs, just stick them into your ROMs folder.  Doesn't matter how you got them, they're just information.

Doh ! I meant Internet Explorer.  An ethernet hub :D  of course ! I'll have to pick one up tomorrow. My only question is when I hook up the hub is internet access imediately mirrored to the second computer screen or do I have to set up the second computer with an ip address and pop number like the cable company did when they set up my main computer ?
Sorry if my questions aren't very clear.  :(

OK, what I'm actually trying to install is the Internet Explorer 6 service pack which is an update so it does fit on a floppy disc but when I try to install it on my MAME cabinet computer I get this message. "Setup was unable to download information about availiable installation sites"  "Setup may have been unable to use your current proxy server settings. Click "advanced" if you know your proxy settings.
Where do I find my proxy settings ?  Is this problem normal when trying to download a file like this off of a floppy disc or is something screwed up with the computer in my cabinet ?  Thanks for the help guys. :)

It's the same thing.  Tries to pull update info from the 'net and can't.  That's why it's failing.

If you mirror the settings from your other machine in this one, and hook it to your ethernet, it 'should' work.

If you're going to be sharing your Internet connection with the other computer, make sure you get the appropriate hub.  Don't just get a cheapie, make sure it's a broadband router.

If I'm not mistaken you can also burn your c:\program files\Internet Explorer folder and all of it's contents from your main PC to a CD-R.  Then pop the CD-R into your cab PC and run the ie6setup.exe from the CD, and that should set it up without you having to download any additional files.

I think if he does that he will miss some dll's.  MS usually has an option to install or save files--I just saved all the setup files to a folder then burned to a cd--easier than configuring a router thats for sure.  Now its been awhile so maybe MS no longer offers that feature.

Edit:  just checked and they don't offer to save the files without installing--someone else my have a workaround for this.--sorry

its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

You need to reset the cablemodem after connecting a different computer to it. Power off both the computer and the cablemodem for 1 minute. Turn on cablemodem first, wait till it goes "online" (lights will stop flashing) then power up the computer.
