So I open some boxes I have in storage, and I find this cool aluminium case with some hard drives in there.  Most of them were the stock xbox drives I pulled, but there was this one Fujitsu 4.3 looking lonely so I decided to fire it up and have a look inside.  Low and behold it was my long lost DOS programs I had in my old 486DX50! 

So I download DOSBOX and D-Fend and get it all wooking and play some LHX.  But something isn't right as the graphics emulation is fine, but the sound it all choppy.  I tried everything in the readme and various youtube and DOS forums but I cannot get anything to work.  I think the PC is too fast, so I tried a VM and plopped DOSBOX in there to no avail.

Is there any DOSBOX gurus out there that can help me get LHX to run in full SoundBlaster Pro glory?

You know, with older games instead of trying to install them manually I usually try to find a torrent online.  Because the average pc user today is what I like to call "dos retarded" typically when you grab a dos game off of a torrent it's already packaged with dos-box and has a batch file setup to launch straight into the game with the proper blaster settings. 

Long story short the best way to setup dos-box is to get someone else to do it for you. 

What all did you find on it, just out of curiosity?

Heck if you are my age, then the blaster settings are so well burned in that it is easier to remember than your social security number.

I'll make you a list.  The Dig is in there also my modded Xwing with 1000 tie fighters.  Imaging 100000 tie fighters right now.

Torrents are fine with console stuff but with PC games, can be more problematic then they are worth.

I've had really good luck with the torrents.  It's just important to get it off a reliable site.  Ironically probably the best one is the infamous ---No torrents please - thanks!---.

Heh, I wonder if I still have my Quake mods lying around.  They were on a floppy so I don't know how in the world I would read them, but it would be nice to see how far my modding/hacking has progressed. 

I got into the tail end of DOS gaming.  I can remember monkeying with the sound-blaster settings on a few games but by that time most games would configure the card automatically.  I can remember having trouble with sound in MAME though.

Just downloaded from http://dosgamer.com/lhx-attack-chopper/ and installed using d-fend reloaded and after going into the sound options and turning sound on (was off by default) it is working fine here. Here is a screen of the various d-fend reloaded settings it created when installing hopefully they will help. Also here is a printout of the .conf file that d-fend reloaded created.

I lied. The problem is with Elite Frontier.  I got LHX working with adlibsound vga in the command line.

OMG, I just had a mini-flashback of trying to get games running in DOS and Windows pre-direct-everything-is-handled-for-you. *shudder*
