Dragon's Lair 20th Anniversary Pack
« on: December 05, 2003, 11:38:55 am »
...greets all!

I just picked up the Dragon's Lair 20th Anniversary CD Rom pack for $19.95 at GameStop (they are usually so over priced so I was very surprised to see this for 50% off of the DigitalLeisure website's price).

Anyway, it includes 4 CD's, Dragon's Lair One, Dragon's Two (Timewarp), Space Ace and a "bonus" CD marked "Extras".
that is great!....they have a full episode of "Starcade" worth the $20. buck alone....what a throwback to my youth.

It also included a 30 minute documentary on the 20th Anniversary of the game and extensive new interviews with Bluth and his gang that was a lot of fun to watch. It also has all of the video from the previous DVD releases.

The video is encoded at mpeg1 so at full screen it can be a touch blurry when the motion's moving fast...but it's totally worth the $20 bucks....but it works flawlessly with my XArcade (and I'm sure with any homebrew panels out there).

Here's a link to the Digital Leisure website...but don't buy it there....too expensive!!!

I was wondering about that. I saw the Anniversary Edition as well as the DL3D version, both of which I wanted to pick up then and there, but I figured on the 3D for now.

Definitely cool, considering the amount of times it's been ported. This is one of the better PC versions out there next to the version you have.

BTW, the DL3D here was only 7.99, a steal IMO. Now I'm tempted to go back and pick up the Anniversary Edt.  :D

I still recommend buying the DVD-ROM version, ripping it, and using the resulting movie files with Daphne if you want authenticity.  But that's just my preference.

....actually this version has an "arcade authentic" check off box (for each version). It was created with the blessing of Jeff Kinder of The Dragon's Lair Project.....

According to the cd faq. the sequences/timing are totally authentic for all 3 versions.

An interesting side note, I discovered that Time Warp (Dragon's Lair 2) can be copied in full to your hard drive and plays perfectly off of the hard drive. The other two (Dragon's Lair 1 and Space Ace) won't work w/o the CD....I wonder why that is ?

BTW there's no lag/search time for this CD Rom version unlike the DVD.

There's no lag/search time when using Daphne, either.  And it's not "a touch blurry" at full screen like you said this CD-ROM version is.  Again, that's just my preference.  If cost is not a concern, I still recommend the DVD.  If it is, perhaps this version of the CD-ROM is a good solution.  The old CD-ROM version was crap.

Yeah I totally agree that the video quality in Daphne is 100% better (it's mpeg 2 vs. the CD Rom of mpeg 1)....but (and this is most likely due to my computer I know); I find that Daphen hangs up once in a while on Dragon's Lair and Space Ace. I think it's simply the processor trying to spool more mpeg video to catch up with the game play...but for me....I would rather have no lag which the CD Roms provide.

I saw a Dragon's Lair / Dragon's Lair 2 / Space Ace cocktail cabinet at the auction this weekend...it ran off of a DVD player and looked very clean. I wonder if it was using this DVD...
5 MAME cabs and counting...

Ever wonder what full side art looks like?
