Linux Mame Distro for Cabinets
« on: May 05, 2014, 05:54:15 am »
I have a trusty old Arcade Cabinet with a Mamewah front end and instant sheller to hide the OS. Its worked great but I think its time to move on from Windows XP.

I would prefer to go with an nix style os if possible, when I built me old cab XMAME was behind the curve. Have things changed?

I did some goggling oping that there was a pre-built linux arcade cabinet distro but came up with a bank.

My initial thoughts are to start with SDLMame on a LTS Ubuntu platform. I see there is a Linux port of MAMEWAH called Wah!Cade which looks interesting.

Questions:
1.) Does anybody have feedback on this software stack? Does MAME now perform ok in Linux?
2.) Any tips for hiding Linux?
3.) Linux video drivers tend to be challenging, any preference on ATI vs Nvidia?

Thanks for the help, its been a while.
Brett

First: there is a specific Linux section.

Second: there is GroovyArcade (under GroovyMame section).

Third:
1) running mame over linux is possible with good performance (depending on your hardware)
2) autologin + auto start X + custom xinitrc
3) use only open source drivers for better support and to achieve low resolution (as graphic card, I would suggest an ati hd5xxx)
Earth could be the hell of another world

Thank you,

Sorry I missed the linux forum somehow.

This will get me started nicely, GroovyArcade looks interesting.
