Anyone mess with the nVidia Shield?
« on: April 29, 2014, 06:03:54 am »
I saw the ads, but never looked to much at it...  But the recent sale on them + my tax return ended up with me picking one up at Fry's...

Anyone mess with these?  I thought it might be an interesting toy that I may or may not return, but have since been duly impressed.  I've put a few android games on it, but when I really started to enjoy it was putting SNES9x and Mame4Droid Reloaded on it...  Been able to play my favorite SNES and arcade games on the go has been great.  What really impressed me though was the PC streaming...  I did it on the LAN and played things suck as Arkham Origins and thought it was pretty neat, but they have recently added experimental internet streaming to it, and WOW.  I was at work the other night connected to their moderately weak public WiFi, and I was able to stream across the 'net and play Arkham Origins.  I was expecting somewhat of a slideshow to be honest, but it was smooth and playable!  I was able to run through several challange maps with Deathstroke and it was damn solid, responsive, and fluid.

Not to mention the mini-HDMI out plus bluetooth, it can be set up as an android microconsole as well.  Not to bash the Ouya, but to have all these abilities and have it portable as well??  Ok, well, let me step back...  I know the Ouya is considerably cheaper, so there is that...  Just seems like the Shield is more powerful, has many more features, and can be used on the go...

For PC streaming Splashtop HD works better with Tegra chipsets. But I tried Splashtop HD on quad core Samsung tablets and they work OK.

For the price at Frys I would look at getting one just for the Tegra and the ability to Stream from the PC.  Splashtop make an interface to interact with the PC so in theory you can stream WOW and play it on your Tablet.  The other alternative is getting DroidMote and controlling via BluezIME enabled devices, so you can get your Shield to play some pretty awesome PC games.  DroidMote uses Bluetooth devices on the Hosts BT Stack.

You might want to check it out.   These apps are on Google Play, and it works with your onboard graphics card.  No silly Nvidia 6xx card is needed. ;)

The two coolest things about the Shield to me are the PC streaming and even more the new ability to map out controls for games that otherwise wouldn't support a controller. That's pretty slick.
It gets more points for being portable.

The only down side is that you need a PC worthy of said streaming. I've had such a backlog of games that I haven't bought a new PC in 3 years. I'm not sure my gear would work with the shield.

I'm waiting for this to come out so I can finally use my Nexus 7 for some emulation on the go:

Obviously no use for PC gaming but at least I won't have to fumble my way through touchscreen interfaces!

Last year I sprung for a JXD7300b which has the mappable software to align the buttons and the two analogue controllers. They cost about £100 on eBay, and I got the black version to make the screen look bigger.  Dual core 1.5 Mali 400 gpu, and comes with a free hand warmer when it gets chilly out.

It gets a lot of use and the controls are excellent

Edit:  I'm getting tired of android second guessing and replacing what I type even after turning it off in settings.....

Yeah I actually bough ta JXD before getting the Nexus 7 - I had to replace it because of a faulty battery charger, but by that point I'd decided I wanted to try an Android tablet "properly" (whatever that means), so sent the JXD back and got the Nexus 7 instead with the intention of buying a controller for it. It's a neat tablet but I've still not found a good controller.

I am still out in the stick's and know nothing about any of the tablets really.

is it possible for this to play pc games like 98 and xp based or is that not possible on them yet or it is and they just lack the power or will it play them without a hitch?

would be kinda cool to have a portable xp gaming rig  :applaud:

We'll that is a tall order to play XP games on it.  I managed to get xwing playable via dosbox on an arm tablet.  My Sony Xperia 10Z plays most DOS  based games well.  98 would crawl.  If you tried emulating XP you would probably activate the laughter mp3 hidden in Android.

Streaming works well enough with Splashtop as well as the thin client and terminal services.  I have 2X running on the tablets and get a usable Windows 7 session, but only on the quad core.  Dual core suffers from lag.

I just wanted to use my tablet like a widows tablet, with swipe, and it works pretty well with windows 8.  Playing WOW is a trip and works pretty well.  You need a good wifi connection.

I hear that the Windows tablets run a fair amount of older games well. Since its Windows many older games should run at least in compatibility mode...only issue would be controls...but you could always just plug in a mouse/keyboard.

Looks fairly cool, but outside of the bigger screen I don't see any real advantages over the Shield...  Actually has less horsepower...
