Windows 8.1 killed my lightgun games!
« on: April 21, 2014, 07:11:37 am »
So, I took the plunge - knew I shouldn't have!! Installed Win 8.1 and now none of the setup I did for lightgun games works!! :(

Sadly, I think this area of emulation is really tricky and underdeveloped.

1) I had HOD3 working on XP with two aimtrak lightguns + Trouble-shooter driver (which allows two lightguns running at once). Tried setting this up on Windows 8.1 - no go! Crosshairs not picking up gun movements or inputs.

2) Had aimtraks working with PS2 via this route: Aimtraks (in Guncon mode) > Topgun drivers (via windows test mode) > Nuvee plugin > PCSX2
Again, working fine on (if I remember correctly) Win 8. However, since update to 8.1, can't install Topgun drivers, despite going through all the steps putting Win into test mode and then signing the drivers.

This is where my cab setup gets really frustrating! I'm not a coder and therefore can't solve this one myself. :(

Surely there must be others out there who are trying to set up lightguns on their cabs?? Sadly, it feels a very under-developed area and now have two custom-built lightguns lying about which are as much use as chocolate teapots. :)

Anyone else having similar problems?

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

When it comes to my MAME cab, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.  I'm still running XP and will continue to do so.  My motherboard recently died and I kept everything the exact same when I installed the new computer.

I've learned from an IT colleague to always image my C drive before testing out operating systems - essentially copying it wholesale to an external drive using imaging software, to copy back if something goes wrong. Worth bearing in mind!

While I do a lot of testing on other OSes for development reasons, my main cabinet still runs 98 on a "fast enough" system, and I haven't found a reason yet to change it.  It's an extreme example, and one that is likely to change in the not too distant future, but when I do, it will be to something that has been around long enough so as not to introduce unknowns into the area of hardware compatibility.  If I could install 98 on a i3, and still have everything work like it does now, but faster, I probably would.  (Only half kidding :))

Use the windows 7 64bit drivers for the topgun.  Works for me.
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.
