MAME 0.152 not saving high scores
« on: April 05, 2014, 03:41:22 pm »
I have hiscore.dat in my root MAME dir; added highscores = 1 to the mame.ini; and created /hi/ directory in the MAME root. Still it won't save high scores.

According to the Unofficial hiscore.dat web site, I have to use their special compiled version "v0.133u3 with hiscore support". Is that right? Newer versions don't support high scores?

Correct. I believe it is not a natural feature of certain machines to save the high score after you remove power. The goal of mame is the perfectly emulate original hardware. Saving the high score would be a hack. Some one please correct me if I am wrong.

Any newer version of mame can be compiled with hi-score capability added back in.

Thanks for the explanation - I hadn't thought of that, and it makes perfect sense.

If you want to keep your hiscores between games you can also use save states: F7 and Shift-F7 for loading and saving.

That works with latest Mame without the need to compile a special version.

^This is why I use also... the tools linked in that thread make it super easy to compile your own mame binaries and getting rid of the message boxes whenever you lauch a rom is just icing on the cake.

Now the only thing I wish there was a patch for is adding "freeplay" to every game in MAME... probably way more work than it's worth though.

So if we compile our own using that diff, do we still need the hiscore.dat file?
