If you're in this hobby long enough, you know all about Twin Galaxies. Now, I know all about the recent stuff, the mess with submissions, the personality clashes, The King of Kong, and so on, but honestly, I don't care about that. As an arcade enthusiast, I'm really more interested in the idea behind Twin Galaxies as the purveyor all video game records back in the 80s.
Because I was only 10 in 1983, and because, quite honestly, there was no Internet, I didn't know about the existance of Twin Galaxies until well into my adulthood. As a kid, I would have LOVED the concept. I loved video games, I was never that good as a general gamer but I DID have some games I got good at that. The idea of a place where you could share your scores with others would have been awesome thing for me to know about.
I was reading an post on KLOV about the "new" Twin Galaxies, and a few posts in there from some really old timers led me to a site commerating a classic arcade in San Jose. This arcade was apparently the site of a Twin Galaxies-sanctioned tournament back in 1983, and it had a flyer announcing it. I liked the simplicity of the design so much that I redrew it in Illustrator, vectoring it and resizing it for tabloid so I could print it and hang it on my wall. I also came across two other Twin Galaxies posters that I redrew: one for the USA vs Japan Challenge in 1983, the other for the 1982 Video Game Olympics. Finally, I found a photo of the original sign hanging above Twin Galaxies, and I redrew it in Illustrator as well. I plan to print these out and hang them in my game room. I enjoy the look of these relics of the past, plus it's been a great way to sharpen my skills with Illustrator.
I'm no Mikonos - I give back to the community! I've attached a .zip below with PNGs of the posters in Tabloid size. If you want the original Illustrator files, just PM me. Enjoy!
