New project after a long time!
« on: March 31, 2014, 05:22:09 pm »
Hi all!!!

It has been like 5 years when i was building "Back to the arcade"
Since then i was always wanted to make a new cabinet. A cabinet bigger than a bartop and smaller than an upright cab.
A slim lowboy is the target.
For about a year i am trying to find the time , the space , the money , the parts and the design of a new project.

Below there are some pics of the new design i have made.

I would like your opinions / suggestions about the dimensions and the design of the cab.

The monitor is designed at 70° angle. The center point of the monitor is 1meter from the ground.

The cp has depth 20cm.

The players will have fun with the cab while sitting on 45cm height chairs.

Looking forward for your opinion and suggestions to make the cab better!!!

Looks good to me. I'd get rid of the keyboard drawer. They are not really necessary, as only needed for admin. Add a usb port to the front of the machine or get a bluetooth keyboard.

Thank you for your replies.

I will think that about the key drawer. I might install there the coin acceptor and cancel the drawer.

On my touch screen jukebox I just use a remote mouse app on my iPad. You just have to connect the cab to your network over wifi, download the app, download the corresponding program to the PC, set it up and you never need to break out a PC or mouse again. Works rather well actually.

Interesting.

What you guys think about the cps height 75cm (29,5 in) . Is it ok for the gamers which will be sitting on 45 height chair?

It's impossible to say whether it will be comfortable or not, that depends on the size of the person(s) sitting there. A guy who is two meters tall might find it uncomfortable, someone who is 1.70 meters tall might find it ok.
Since you probably will be the guy who uses the cab the most, it should be comfy for you.

Do a simple test : Grab something that is 75 cm high (a table, some cardboard boxes, a stack of books, whatever), put your chair in front of it, yourself in the chair and pretend to play.
Is it comfy ? Cool. If not, you can a) use an adjustable chair or b) change the height of the control panel.

I'm just thankful not to see another computer desk-esque viewlix or laptop-in-a-box weecade project.

yama: The cab is designed for the average height which is lets say 1,75~1,81 m. For me the height of the cp is ok. The reason i worry about it is beacause i have no idea whats the lowboys cp height.

Pbj: Glad to hear that. As you can see at my signature i have already built a weecade clone and i am not totaly satisfied with the retro feeling i was expecting....thats why i have dscided to built a full cab.

One of the standards i have set for these project is that the cab MUST have a coin acceptor. Alternative It will have a switch for Free play mode.

Any suggestions about the design? I am about to starting printing the plans and cutting the wood.
