Huge favour (3D software file format conversion)
« on: March 06, 2014, 07:36:08 am »
Can someone who knows how the hell this stuff all works convert the file for markc74's Terminus cabinet into a usable AutoCAD file for me? I would like to send it off to be routed by CNC but the file formats accepted are restricted to DWG’s, DXF, IGES, STL, OBJ, RHINO, and 3DS, and the original file is an X3D file.

If anyone can do this for me I would be most grateful!

Hey ho. Let me root out the original file and I'll see if I can export it from the original program.

That file you have linked is an x3d file which isnt the original one I created so I'll need to locate it from one of my hard drives...!

Try these - converted to obj, dxf and stl as separate files.

I don't have access to the respective programs so can't say for sure that they haven't inherited any problems from the conversion but they seemed to import back into ac3d ok.

Good luck!

I'm sure these will be perfect, many thanks mark.

Out of interest, if I added some extra height to the build would any of the other bits need to be altered (supports ,etc)? I'm quite tall y'see so was hoping to add, say, 20cm to it so I'm not too hunched (but so that my other adult friends can still play ok!).

I probably wouldn't just put 20cm on the base as it would make the control panel too high. There's a really good post on here about finding the ideal height and angle for the cp by using the height of your elbow and measuring from there but you may need to do a search to find the full detail of it (I'm on a mobile so can't find it easily).

The monitor height you could adjust fairly easily but it may make more sense to adjust the angle to point higher. It's best to mock stuff up using cardboard to get a feel for it. I'm doing that with my blip build and it makes so much more sense to do that as you will know what's comfortable and tweak the profile around that.

Wow, so apparently using the elbow method my control panel needs to be 48" high (and that's rounding down to the nearest foot). Bear in mind I'm 6'6". Is this obscene?

Yes. Yes it is.

But does that sound about right or have I measured this wrong?

The lowest part of mine is 36" off the floor. Though I am only 5'7. I guess it depends - I doubt someone my height could comfortably play a game with the controls 4 feet up. So if you and the other giants are going to be the only ones playing it, go right ahead! On the oth hand, it would be easier for you to stoop down some if you want to share. Of course there is always phone books!

Well logic would seem to dictate that if you're 11" shorter than me, then your control panel would be 11" lower than mine? So I guess 48" wasn't that far off after all.

But yes, it's hardly an ideal two-player scenario if friends can't reach the panel to play it! Luckily most of my close male friends are fairly tall anyway, so I reckon 40-42" should be a fair compromise.
