forcing mame resolution

How do I go about forcing mame to run 640x480 for every game, all the time?

i added reslution 640 480 in the mame.ini but I don't believe it did anything.

It's 640x480x32 or what have you. 

Also "switchres" needs to be turned on in the ini file as well.

I could be wrong, but the third parameter in the resolution line should be the vertical refresh rate

i.e.

switchres 1

resolution 640x480@60
