can u recommend an XP 64bit PC?

hi all,
im thinking of getting a pc base unit to set up with groovymame (will be using low res arcade monitor or crt tv).
i would be looking for a 64bit setup, windows xp, so obviously the base unit would need to be xp 64bit compatible.
rather than just buy all the seperate components myself (mainboard, cpu, etc) i would rather just get a ready to go base unit (eg. HP, Dell, etc...).
im not bothered about running ALL games, stuff like gradius 4 or gauntlet legends etc i dont need to run those, and im not looking to play 3d games either. i havnt put down a budget but obviously it would have to be a used pc on eg. ebay as modern kit wont like xp 64bit
so does anyone have any recommendations?
regarding cpu, basically should i be looking for something made 2008 onwards?

actually that said is it better to wait until groovymame + windows 7 move forward together, or is windows xp 64bit still the way to go (and continue for the foreseeable future?)

Whatever you by that's decent enough should support Windows 7 too so that shouldn't be a problem.

If you don't need anything too fancy a Core2Duo mother board should do the job, it's the one I still have in my cab and happy with it. Of course go for the most powerful CPU you can get.

Most important part of using GM is the video card, of of the built in on board cards are not the greatest so you might have to buy a ATI video card.  Make sure your video card is on the list of supported cards and you should be good. You can stick with XP, it works and for the most part is stable and highly modifiable for cabinet installs.

Dell optiplex 760 looks like another contender, seems xp 64bit will work with that
that one takes core 2 duo cpus eg. 3ghz, same as the hp compaq DC7900

havnt found any xp 64bit friendly base units which support beyond core 2 duo eg. Intel Core2 Duo E8400 3ghz
if anyone knows of any please post here

E8400 is what i've got in mine... (maybe E8500) and it cruises along nicely.. will be a good choice!

I had issues with my i7-930 in a GA-X58A-UD3R (rev. 2.0) with XP 64bit.
I installed all latest drivers for everything but still got really poor performance in Mame. I couldn't even run games like Wonderboy at full speed.
I never managed to solve it and had to give up. Tried reinstalling Windows from scratch several times too and tried all sorts of drivers, disabled hyperthreading, etc, etc
Spent days on it, was quite frustrating. No such issues with Windows 7 x64 on the same hardware.

do you remember if you tried reinstalling service pack 2 for your windows xp 64bit?
i heard about some people having performance trouble until they did that (even though their xp 64bit install disks came with service pack 2 already)

i m running 2 dell optiplex core2duo 3g with xp64 -mame64 -crtemudriver- ati 4350 and x600 in my two ok baby cabs . works like a charm without causing any probs . even sh3 games are running at 100 % .

Yeah, I read about that too. Mine didn't come with SP2 built in, so I installed it and then I did all the windows updates and then even tried installing SP2 again separately. With no difference in Mame performance.
