Cocktail Concept - Advice needed
« on: December 02, 2003, 02:17:19 am »
I have a vertical cocktail cabinet  (Midway/Pac Man design).  I REALLY want a horizontal cocktail.  With the recent addition of Williams cocktail diagrams on jakobuds site (I wish I could give the contributor credit here), I'm seriously contimplating building a Williams Cocktail Cabinet.  If I could afford a Williams cabinet I'd be forced to retro it anyway, so this is really my only option.  I'm not the best carpenter and some of the cuts scare me(keeping them accurate), but I think I can get help or even pay a cabinet builder/carpenter to make them for me.

One control panel would be an authentic Robotron cocktail control panel just two wico 8-ways, while the other side would house 1-8 way joystick, a 4 button Neo-Geo style layout, and a spinner.

Any advice/input would be helpful:
areas of concern

**I have the recently upped Robotron Cocktail CPO's, but am unsure of the best printing  method.

**Locating a Williams Cocktail Coin Door

**Locating/Fabricating Glass Clips

**Wood Grain??? Got to have it, don't I???

**Backside CP layout --

All help is greatly appreciated.

Well, if you are scratchbuilding than you can use any coin door as long as there is room for it on the cabinet. There, one less thing to worry about.

At first I thought so, but the narrowness of the Williams style cabe combined with a 19" monitor is going to make it awfully tight to install a Midway/Bally style coin door.  Wheras the narrow WIlliams door would fit more in the corner of the cabinet.

Exactly which style of Williams cocktail are you making? Most of them are 13" ones. If memory serves me correct Stargate, Defender, and Robotron were all 13" ones, and Joust was the only 19" one. But Joust is a totally different design.

my robo ct has a 19" monitor in it.

as for the coin door, paige is right you should be able to use just about any non over under door. it might be tight but i don't see much of a problem. if you have to use a smaller one, i'd just try to scrounge one from a trashed cocktail cab(ebay would be a good source). finding an original door will be tough. i know atari used skinny doors as well as some others.......paige would be a better source of this info(or klov)

the glass clips will be easy. you could use atari/midway type corner clips and have the glass go over the entire top of the cab. covering the control panel are, sort of like the how the midway ct's look. or lowes/home depot sells bulk aluminum trim that would look and work much like the original clips.

as far as your wood grain question, that's pretty much personal preference. just depends on what look your going for.

how to create the art for the other cp is covered fairly well in the forums here(specifically the artwork forum).

good luck on your project, building them is as much as playing 'em if you ask me.

I used to think that too, but lately I have really gotten sick of working on games. I have gotten sick of staring at my Battlezone and waiting for it to Mame itself. I have gotten sick of not even being able to work on my Force II pin, because I backed it into an odd spot in the gameroom, and now I can't get the glass off the thing unless I move everything else.

I am tired of desoldering 16 pin ICs and adding sockets and swapping chips in an attempt to get my Sprint 2 working. I am tired of watching my Crystal Castles reset, and hoping it will stay up long enough to play an entire game.

I am also pretty tired of my pulsing monitor in my Time Pilot cocktail.

Right now I am seriously considering selling off 4 or 5 pieces, getting the rest working 100 percent, and then calling it done.

Well, that's it.  The world is coming to an end.

Thanks for the help.  I talked with a custom cabinet maker regarding construction and materials.  Wow what a project a Williams cab is in comparison to midway.

Anyone with extra pics of the INSIDE of a Williams cabinet?  I have a few questions that pictures could clear up.

Thanks.

Sorry i didn't include anything about the inside of the cabinet in the plans.  I mean there really isn't much to it. Its just a box.  Build it however you want on the inside. Its the astetics of the outside of the cabinets that is important in my opinion.  Thats sort of the idea I try to push with all the plans on my site.  Anyways heres some pics of the inside of the Williams Robotron cocktail.
