Monitor damage - burned wire

I recently obtained a cab for pretty cheap with a nice 27" monitor (color and picture looks good), but I noticed there was some damage inside and was wondering what this was and how it happened. The black wire with the plastic around it leads to the monitor setting board with buttons.. but what about the the square piece. I don't have much of an electronics background beyond your capacitors/resistors/etc so any insight would be nice, thanks!

that round burnt thing is called a ferious choke in a plastic case,
it looks like it was hitting that 5watt resistor
which melted the case a tad

a ferrous choke is a tube magnet, it filters out noise on the circuit, by sending it trough a magnetic field, doing so only the strongest frequency's make it trough the tube's field, the weaker one's bleed out as they cycle trough the field.
it could be that the current of the resistor was drawn by the magnetic field, and created an arc, anyway you should make the inside of the block dry with a blowdryer and seal it with tape and keep that magnet away from everything, there is a reason there is a plastic case around it, apparently it is not thick enough.
and if the screen works there is no damage done..

Thanks for the info guys, fortunately the monitor still powers on.. knock on wood. I'll try to keep  the choke away from the other parts.
