Fastest Motherboard with Windows XP 64-bit Driver Support?
« on: February 18, 2014, 10:28:18 am »
CRT_EmuDriver takes care of the 64-bit XP video drivers for the ATI X600. GroovyMAME64 is the primary application.

What Motherboard/CPU are you running Windows XP 64-bit on?

What is the fastest Motherboard/CPU that works with Windows XP 64-bit?

Thanks!

Serious question: What's the benefit for a gaming machine running 64-bit XP as opposed to 32-bit XP?

I tried it a few years back and I had nothing but headaches getting things to work right on it and in the end I didn't see any actual performance improvements.

XP 64 is a huge PITA, IMO.  Not worth the hassle.

Well mame64 will offer a noticeable performance boost.  I keep hearing people talk about issues with it, but I've never experienced any.

Okay, Windows XP 64-bit (x64) is the only Windows that supports 64-bit CRT_Emudrivers and 64-bit MAME. 64-bit MAME is generally faster than 32-bit MAME especially in the most demanding games. I am actually happy with my XP x64 setup. I am just curious about the fastest possibilities.

My PC Specs are now:

Intel E8400 CPU @ 3060 MHz (340 x 9)
MSI 945GCM5-F V2 (FSB 1333) Mother Board
4GB DDR2 667
64 GB SSD HD
ATI X600 (CRT_EmuDriver XP x64 drivers)
Windows XP x64
MaLa 1.7.2.0 front end
GroovyMAME64 v152ex2 (GM patched the Haze release)

I have not had any problems using Windows XP x64. Most newer motherboards state Windows 7/8 support. There must have been a cutoff point. As some of us use XP x64 on our MAME rigs I ask this question here. What is the fastest Motherboard/CPU that works with Windows XP 64-bit?

Makes a big difference on some drivers, none on others.  One of the big ones is the seattle driver that NFL Blitz, SF Rush, California Speed, etc. run on.

It's really hard to pinpoint one single board or hardware generation that stopped xp x64 support as generally support for the platform was never very good to begin with.

I will say this, get faster ram. Judging by your system specs, It's the biggest bottleneck of your system. At least ddr2 800 ddr2 1000 at best. The cpu and board you are running can accept up to 1333 which is quite rare in ddr2 form.

Thanks for the RAM suggestion. I am not really looking to upgrade that particular system as it works okay as-is. I posted it as an example of my working XP x64 system.

We can frame this question from that angle though. Is someone running an XP x64 system with better specs than what I posted?

Some first gen 1156 stuff did claim to have xp support. The first gen Clarkdale based i3 and i5 stuff was also said to still be supported by xp but i never personally tested anything of that platform on xp x64. Just doing a quick search showed that the intel p55 based chipset boards have a full range of xp x64 drivers

Thanks for the info 404. The Gibabyte website http://www.gigabyte.us/products/main.aspx?s=42 allows listing their motherboards by Socket or Chipset among other things.
They also have a drop-down menu to select the 64-bit XP drivers.

There are several Gigabyte Motherboard options available for Windows XP x64 with Socket 1155/1156 and the Intel P55/Z77/H55/H57 Chipset.

I have an i5/P55 system that should also support XP x64.

EDIT: It looks like most Socket 1155/1156/2011 Gigabyte Motherboards with Intel Chipsets should support Windows XP x64 as they have the drivers listed on their website.
