mame 1.52 laggy
« on: February 10, 2014, 07:43:23 pm »
Hey All

So I'm using mame 1.52 with no nag/highscore compiled into it.

I am finding that games in general run like they're in slow motion (well not quite, but slower than on my quad core computer)

The sound stutters too.

I tried using another mame, such as the one with the graphical interface, and it seems to run about 10% better.

My mame PC is a dell inspiron 531
-amd athlon 64 x2 6000+ (3.0ghz)
-4 gigs of ddr2 ram
-win7 64 (i tried win 7 32 bit and the lag remains)
-HD: 7200 rpm toshiba drive
-on board video card
-on board sound

I searched around and believe that any dual core CPU above 2.2ghz, should run most games decently, but I am finding this is not the case.

Can anyone give me any suggestions on improving performance?  I know that a dedicated GPU won't do much, but what about another gig of ram?

The PC is dedicated for mame use and has no other applications etc. on it.

cheers

Do you have HLSL enabled in mame.ini?
That is pretty GPU intensive and onboard graphics can't usually handle it.

EDIT: also what games in particular are you talking about not running full speed?

pretty much any mame 1.52 game

-Cadillacs and Dinosaurs
-golden axe
-final fight
-cave games (dodonpachi, i know this one is a bit more graphic intense
)
-etc...

went into mame.ini

HLSL_enable was set at 0, I changed it to 1

As BadMouth said, leave HLSL alone (0).

Your computer is able to run that games at full speed so there is an issue with your on board video card or maybe with on board sound card drivers...

Please post the on board video card you´ve got (e.g. intel GMA...) and driver version your are using.

Disable any graphical effects you may have configured in mame.
Try running mame in full screen. It will give you better perfomance.
Try disabling sound to see if it´s a on board sound card problem related

Try running another Mame version (e.g http://shmupmame.wordpress.com) to test if your 152 version is somehow broken.

It's 0.152, btw. Seventeen years later and we're only on POINT one five two. Crazy...

Hello

I have not enable anything in mame video settings, it's just default
-mame is always running in full screen, which causes the sound stutter and video lag, when I played it in a smaller window, the game ran normally!

I tried using other versions of mame (groovy mame, etc.) but same result in full screen

even games like donkey kong jr have sound stutter and video lag

I have attached a picture of  my sound and video drivers
-disabling sound in device manager did not help

WELL

I ended up putting a nicer GPU in it and now everything runs flawlessly!  No stutters whatsoever.

Strange though, I read that mame is suppose to be CPU dependant rather than GPU, but my experiences say otherwise....

thanks for the help!

Very strange, as you said MAME is CPU dependant. Only HLSL filters are GPU dependant.

When you use an on board GPU it pulls CPU cycles and uses your system RAM. More often than not putting a GPU in and not using the on board will improve performance, especially around the era of CPU you are using.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

Oh yeah, tossing a video card in there versus using on-board is almost always going to create an improvement.

You had old (2009) ATI drivers.. that will make a big difference. CPS1/etc should be fine with the onboard on that machine I would think. If you needed to go back to the onboard for some reason, make sure the drivers are up to date.

i have 2 of these PCs with same specs

I'll test it out when I set up the other comp and let you know!
